Obviously, there are those that will claim that I'm going to approve of this man's actions whatever they are, but I must say this tickled me.

I quite like the man, but he does have some very poor immitators out there who are nowhere near as funny, clever or good looking.

"
Michael McIntyre has reportedly walked out of a corporate gig, the moment he realised he would be performing for hundreds of debt collectors.

He lost a reputed £28,000 for withdrawing from the private bash at London’s O2 Arena just half an hour before it was due to start.

Before he hit the big time, McIntyre was £40,000 in debt, and would struggle to meet the rent – or even the Tube fare to get to gigs. However now his fortunes have reversed, and he recently bought a £3.2million in North London.

Around 350 employees of Kent-based Cabot Financial Ltd, which made £13million profit chasing bad debts it buysfrom banks and credit card companies, were at the O2 gig, which cost an estimated £200,000 to put on.

A spokesman for the comic told the Sunday Mirror: ‘Michael was in debt himself and has a conscience, especially at this time of year.’"

Must have taken some balls to call it off at that late notice.

I dare say the rest of the audience wouldnt have been impressed.

I think he missed a trick here to be honest. He should have called them all to the front (thinking they were getting special treatment as a party booking etc), and then had security escort them out whilst he educated the audience as to his actions.

I'm a big fan of his, but half an hour? Did he not know beforehand? And, they're hardly pedophiles, no matter how little he or others might approve.

I doubt he's making that equivalence but it's his choice where he takes his money from though isn't it?

Ta, and fair play to him.

£30k for an hours comedy to 350 people, or do we think that is what he had to pay because he (presumably) breached his contract?

Got to agree with the above though, can't see much wrong with debt-collectors (although maybe if I had had £40k of debt in the past I wouldnt be saying this!).

Nice to see someone saying no to money in favour of their principles.

It was a private (corporate) gig, he'd have basically had to walk out on stage, call the entire audience names and walk off.

He could have taken money off people he despises and used it to help others that are in the same situation he was once in. everyones a winner!

I think he was wrong, but I understand his motive/reason

I see your point, but debt collectors can use some entirely scummy methods to spoil people's day. Maybe he did the same?

Devil's advocate mode... If people didn't borrow what they can't afford to pay back, debt collectors wouldn't be able to cause them hassle.

But of course they needed the money for fags and booze rather than paying the loan on the 50" plasma didn't they?

Not always the case.
I've been in debt before with a mainstream bank. I took out loans/overdraft to pay people I had employed. If I hadn't they would have ended up in debt instead. Interestingly the bank then tried to screw me by cutting credit 2 days before a customer paid a large invoice which would have cleared the loans/overdraft. As a result I lost my business, others lost their jobs.
So it really boils my piss when we the tax payers bailed the fkers out.

So not everyone in debt is scum.

Good for him.

Where are all the "if you haven't got it don't spend it", holier-than-thou PH'ers whenever there's a thread about debt?

Edited to add: Just noticed some have arrived already.

Oh, I'm one of them.

However, I recognise the difference between lending institutions and these borderline criminal parasitic scum and their disgusting practices.
