So am looking to purchase a house in Herts. Having had a look around, St Albans is way overpriced. Hatfield is slightley better but not too keen, however a few people have mentioned Luton to me. I know it doesnt have a great image or the best reputation but seeing how much more you can get for your money is pretty astounding.

So what are the areas in Luton worth looking at? (preferably on the south side)

Shefford is pretty nice and not very far away. Also Sandy is quite nice, which again is only 20 mins away or so. Is that too far?

Having been there once or twice (to watch football) I would say the exit back onto the M1

would like to add, my B-I-L is originally from Luton, and doesn't have a good word to say about it either

Well I work in Hemel myself but wife to be would need reasonably good access to London.

Initially I was not considering Luton but you can get a huge 3 bed for the price of a crappy 1 bed flat in st albans.

Come over to Tring/Wigginton. You can be in Euston within 40 minutes of leaving your house in the mornings and can be in Hemel within 15 minutes along the A41. We're also surrounded by pretty countryside, so get the best of both worlds.

Can't you understand how this works!?!?

Generally in different parts of the country you will get more or less for the same number of pounds. This tends to be correlated with the 'niceness' of the place(s) in question.

St Albans vs. Luton...hmmm I know which I would prefer!!

Good luck whatever way you go!

Cheers

Try Hitchin. Only about half an hour from Kings Cross, much cheaper than St Albans, Harpenden, Radlet etc. I recommend it.

The south side is the area to be generally avoided, especially Farley Hill.

If you want somewhere fairly cheap on the south side then there's a lot of victorian terraces off London Road that aren't bad.

There's little wrong with some parts of Stopsley, though other parts of it are fairly crap.

For the posh bit you need to be looking in the Old Bedford Road area, but more than a mile away from the town centre.

What sort of price range are you looking at?

Sandy is on the mainline down into King's X. Doesn't take too long atall. Also like the other chap said, Hitchen is quite nice. Biggleswade isn't too bad, which again is on the mainline and isn't too far to Hemel. Clophill is a little place not far from Luton, or Hemel, maybe 10 mins from both.

I've yet to meet anyone from there that didn't have either six fingers or eyes pointing in opposite directions.
