Ok,

In a town there are 3,600 males

There are 3,663 females.

How many males as a percentage of the total are there, and how did you work it out?

Thanks.

WR.

Sum of them both gives a total of 7263..

Then males, divided by the total (3600/7263) is 0.4956629491945477

Multiply by 100 gives 49.56629491945477 %

To be precise :P

Okay here's another:

You have the age statistics for town A and town B in terms of percentages but not in numerical form.

You want to know what the combined percentage for people that age in the region (town A + town B) is; would that simply be a case of adding percentage A to percentage B?

I.E.

5% are age 0-4 in town A
8% are age 0-4 in town B

13% are age 0-4 in the region.

Doesn't look right to me? scratchchin

isn't it 6.5% as your taking an average of both towns...

That's what I thought...scratchchin

Depends on the number in town A and the number in town B. Not enough info for a numerical answer.

Which is likely to be the answer although they should say this in the question!

Erm...were you serious, asking for that? Or was it just a precursor to the next question? Or am I overestimating the mathematical ability of anyone over the age of 10.

Where it could become complicated is if town A had a population of 2300 (for example) and town B 4100.....the figure wouldn't be entirely accurate.....Who'd be a maths teacher?......

Again...erm...no, it's not complicated at all.

5% of 2300 = 115
8% of 4100 = 328

115 + 328 = 443

443 as a percentage of 6400 (443/6400 * 100) = 6.92%

I'm astonished you're asking for help, to be honest.
