My friend just sold his iPhone on ebay for £271, despite the buy it now only being £265. The woman payed immediately through paypal, and is now coming from Liverpool to pick it up, even though my friend lives in Blackpool. Seems strange that she payed over the BIN price, and it traveling there immediately. Could she be trying to pull a fast one?

I may seem thick saying this but how do you think she could be pulling a fast one? It is a bit strange but you can't take money back from PayPal can you?

She collects the phone and then tells Paypal that she hasn't received it. They then ask your friend for a tracking number and when he cannot provide it they take the money back from him and refund the lady... or she could just be desperate to get the phone and have had some funds in her Paypal account

DO NOT LET HIM GO THROUGHT WITH THE TRANSACTION.

This is a common scam. Pay by paypal, collect item, file dispute, get money back, seller can't even leave negative feedback.

PAYPAL WILL NOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT "COLLECTED" GOODS

Tell him to reject the payment in favour of cash in hand or not at all!

Yes I was worried about not having a tracking number. I'll tell him not to do it. Thanks.

Ahh You can tell I don't do Ebay!! I leave it all to hubby who would have probably told me the same if only I'd bothered asking him!

Hubby has suggested why doesn't he get her to pay the cash when she collects the phone.

Or just ask her to bring ID which matches the account she paid from (and take a photo of it) and get someone to take a photo of him handing the phone over to the buyer.

Yes it could be the 'Paypal not received scam', although it could be perfectly legit and she could just really want the phone as an xmas pressie.

Get him to get her to sign for it and photograph/photocopy her driving license / passport / credit card and I can't see your buddy going far wrong in any subsequent dispute or legal action tbh.

It's very easy nowadays to be paranoid when selling high value goods or cars but at the end of the day, I've never had any probs selling cars for cash on PH despite the risk....

This. No photo of ID & buyer, no phone.

Let her come, tell her the phone's lost and say sorry.

Pay back to her paypal account or let her claim the cash back.

She paid to travel from Liverpool to Blackpool...

She loses...

Job's a good 'un....smile

He got her address off paypal, so I suppose he could send her something via special delivery tomorrow, then he will at least have a tracking number?

He could, although that wouldn't be wise.

Just refund the paypal - and ask for cash on collection.

As above, cash only unless he wants to fully document everything with a camera from the moment she arrives including driving license, credit card etc as well as getting her to sign a reciept to say she has recieved. Although I don't understand the rush, the paypal refund would still be valid if she collected it 2 days from now.....? No?

Barking up the wrong tree with anything like this.

Paypal wouldn't be interested if you had a signed confession.

Collections are cash only. Always.

Never, ever, ever use paypal for collections.

If they go ahead with this, even with pictures, video and signed receipts, I guarantee the next thread will be 'paypal scam took my money away'.

DO NOT ACCEPT PAYPAL FOR COLLECTIONS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!

If they want the 'phone, they'll pay cash.
