With all the fakes around these days and the lenghts people go to why do fraudsters not put fake hallmarks onto a metal the same weight as gold? they can fake a pound coin. If they then took it to a jeweller they just weigh it and pay the money or even sell on ebay where if someone bought a ring they may never even know.

i am only asking as i would like a gold pocket watch and it has started me thinking.

Lead chain with gold plating, and maybe the clasp and first 2-3 links in solid gold incase they want to scratch, then send it to one of those postal gold aholes.

The only flaw is you'd just about break even on the scrap value of the lead.

Fecking with hallmarks really not a good idea.

The penalties if caught are somewhat more serious.

My cousin owns a cash generator / cash converter type shop so buys gold / jewellery aswell.

He recently get sold a couple of gold chains recently which are apparently almost impossible to tell apart.

He only found out when he took the gold to the wholesaler who buys it from him, they have a machine that sends some sort of electrical current / signal (no idea what to be honest!) through the gold and the reading tells them whether it's real or not. The wholesaler couldn't tell these from the real thing without this machine, so it goes to show how good the fakes are now.

Machine costs a lot of money, so not worthwhile him getting one for low volumes of buy in, but I would assume any jewellers (or these new we buy your gold companies) would have this equipment.

He's right.

Those card people get seriously nasty when provoked.
