Thames Water has cut electricity bills by £15 million by generating power from its customers’ sewage.

In 2008/09 the water company generated 14 per cent of its power needs from burning sewage sludge or the methane from it.

Energy from Waste is definitely the way forward (in my opinion). Unfortunately, the plants don't look so iconic as wind turbines so never get the same press when people think about renewable energy.

First time I went to Columbus I was told aboot the energy plant there that was biomass or summat. I seemed like a brilliant idea.

Not a lot new about this. The local sewage treatment plant has been running itself for years - I was seen this in about 1995.
