question about people on the dole
Discussion
i have an acquaintance who has been on the dole on and off (mostly on...) the dole most of his life. he is now 55, has been unemployed for the last 10 years and as far as i know cant claim dole any longer as he is not actively seeking work. he lives with his long term partner who does work. She owns the house, pays all the bills and in general supports him.
question is, will he get a state pension when he is 65?

As I understand it, you need to have so many years NI contributions to claim a pension. That's why if you have an NI shortfall the government will ask you to make up the difference.
I think you need to have 44 years NI contributions, do you get your NI contributions paid as part of being on the dole ?

To the OP: I know of a bloke that went between the dole/sick for the best part of 30 years (or so I'm told by others, he claims he was a builder) and now he gets his state pension, which he moans about.

A year after the Government vowed to crack down on housing benefits, a single mother of eight is still living in a £2.6million mansion funded by taxpayers.
Francesca Walker receives more than £90,000 a year in housing allowance to meet the rent on the five-bedroom villa, plus other payouts of £15,000.

House : - Signed over to kids 10yrs before retirement ( if you trust em lol )
Car : - Again in Kids name
then proceed to hold your hand out for your "far share"
you have to "play the system" or you wont get a thing!

The JSA aka the dole is only one of a range of welfare benefits available. He may be on incapacity benefit, employment and support allowance or any one of a number of benefits to keep the wolf from the door. AFAIK this Government in order to depress the number of people claiming to be unemployed encouraged them to become disabled or long term sick. This had the effect of increasing the welfare bill whilst allowing Blair/Brown and their fellow travellers to claim low unemployment.question is, will he get a state pension when he is 65?

he is fit and well and not on any incapacity... i don't think he is on any other benefits,
if this is the case and he is not claiming dole (JSA) will he be eligible for a state pension? I recon he has worked for about 15 of the last 40 years....

He will get a reduced pension, however, if he were single and on a low pension he would be entitled to have his income increased to the £130.00 per week MIG (minimum income guarantee). His live in girlfriend/wife's income and assets would reduce this.if this is the case and he is not claiming dole (JSA) will he be eligible for a state pension? Can I ask a related question?
I am self employed and sometimes let my NI payments lapse, as long as I pay them eventually will my pension be OK?
I do the same, they should write to you eventually to give you the option of joining back in/catching up.I am self employed and sometimes let my NI payments lapse, as long as I pay them eventually will my pension be OK?
Never thought about it before really.
