Just had my mum on the phone, my vet thinks my dog Todd is in to much pain and discomfort to carry on. He has been ill for about 1 and a half years, having peaks and troughs in his health. recently he has improved dramatically, increasing his weight by 1kg a week on average, eating well etc. On Thursday he was even well enough to do a couple of small courses of agility on a low height. On Sunday he went downhill quickly, was very sleepy and not interested in anything at all. He has been in the vets during the day since Monday, on a drip and coming home in the everning. I noticed yesterday that he had gone downhill and was very unhappy to lie down.

I realy want to do the best for him, and to prevent him from being in pain, but we have been near to putting him to sleep in the past, but every time he has sprung back to health. I suppose I can't make a choice before seeing him, I have got to know the vet so well since he has been ill, I am sure she would not suggest it unless she thought it would be the kindest thing to do.

I remember when I was about 13 and we had to put our dog down cos he was ill. It broke my heart and looking back it was the right thing to do - as if you love something why would you want to see them suffer.

the best cure is to go get another puppy after as this will help take your mind off your original dog who would then be in dog heaven looking down at you thinking you are great for relieving their pain.

Its a hard decision but a right one to do.

Good luck.

We had our cat put to sleep on monday, 20 yrs old she was bless her.

One of the hardest things ive had to do but at least I know she had a great life and went at the right time, before suffering too much.

It will be hard mate, the house will feel strange but just remember all the good times.

Ruddy animals, they do seem to have a hold over us soppy humans

We had to put one of our pets to sleep last year, one of the toughest decisions I have had to make. But as has been said, you have to think whats best for the dog, and be strong.
Best wish's to you.

I'm sorry man, it's one of the hardest decisions to make. I suppose you can only really go with the vets advice, not that that makes it any easier.

My sympathies.

My sympathies, I know how rubbish it feels. I see we're in the same sort of area - our vet was fantastic before and after.

I dread this day in my life.

Its true when they say dogs are mans best friend, never judging you and never bare grudges.

Tuff decision, but you have to think of the dog and not let your feeling get in the way. If the vet knows what the dog means to you and they are saying that putting it to sleep is the kindest option then its time to say your good byes.

My dog Toby was 16 years old when I had him put down. I got him when I was eight years old, he was with me as I grew from a little boy of eight to a man at 24.

Nearly 10 years ago now and still miss the sopey old sod.

P

Do not make the mistake as I did by staying outside while they put him down. At the time I couldn't handle it which is something I have come to regret.

All the best

Sorry to hear this.

Good luck, and although its difficult it is sometimes the best thing you can do for them.

Thanks for all the messages, I do know that it would be the best for him, if he was in the same state as this morning. I was just hoping he would improve during the day, but it dosn't sound like he has. I would definatly get a dog quickly after losing him, but I promised myself that when I didn't have a dog as a commitment I would go travelling for a couple of months. I will just have to decide, which would make me happier getting another dog or to go traveling.

This has just been a crap end to a crap year. A couple of pics of my special boy

Thnaks Ali.

My vet has just called to say there is another scan that there is another scan they can do, but the earliest possible is tomorrow. There is a thickerning on his stomach wall and fluid in the stomach. I realy don't know what to do for the best. Another night of pain for him with the possability of a solution, or to put him to sleep tonight. I expect it will be an easier choice when I see him at the vets and speak to the vet directly.

Just to say that my other GSD, Jake, had similar symptons and also seemed to enjoy a brief resurgence, but it was not to be, although it was a quicker process than you seem to be enduring and he passed away early one morning after having seen the vet a few days previous.

FWIW, if you can bear it, stay with him for the end - it really is not any trauma for the dog, and is over VERY quickly. If you dont, you will probably only wish you had!

Cant really add much to what I said on the other thread, but all the best - a lovely looking dog!

Thanks I will wait to hear what my vet says, I can trust her to give me her honest opinon. I feel like it will have to be a real, real posability that the scan will show up items that can be treated to prolong his pain. Thanks for your comments Rollcage. I fully intend to be with him at the end, along with my mum who looks after him when I am at work.

I've fortunately never been in this position, but having pets I'm sure one day I will be.

The only thing you can do is what you feel is best for the animal on vet's advice - and that may be to end it's suffering - regardless of how down it makes you feel. Such a tough decision, but ultimately the right one.

All the best, take care.
