I'm wondering why anyone is surprised, the slightest fluctuation from what we consider "normal" weather and this country is on its knees,
Its pathetic, a Slovak who works for me was amused at how the weather was being reported like its the end of the world!
"This isn't snow, don't your government / councils learn from earlier on this year / years gone by?"
What could I say to him, he is well prepared for weather here I.e always has a jacket and umbrella in the car even in summer, currently has winter tyres on his runabout and has a blanket and a flask in the car with him when he's popping further afeild incase he gets stranded.
He has been here four years and shows up most British people when it comes to being prepared for the less than unusual weather we have over here!

Here in East Sussex, off the main roads most of the places like Saltdean, Peacehaven and Ovingdean are quite hilly and the roads are really bad. Sheet ice and lots of black ice.
I think last night there was a slight thaw then the temp droppped and the place is now super dangerous...
I went out with the wife yesterday and I dropped her off to deliver some cards at the bottom of a Road in Saltdean. She walked up to our friend's house... Meanwhile a Renault zooms up the hill thinking speed was the answer..... then the car lost grip and speed and started to slide down the hill towards me. Our Cooper S did not start on the first attempt.... But when it did I was out of there! Moments later a Ford did the same trick off another side road and I wantched him slide back across a main road.
Yes, this Country has trouble with snow and ice but I am not sure any grit/salt will sort the kind of thaw/re-freeze we had last night. Wherever you are this makes the roads bad.

Understand this perfectly, being from Haggisland and having lived in places like California during the career I took the jump to move to Germany without paying much thought - over here it's LAW to have winter tyres on once the temp drops low enough, if someone shunts you and you don't have winter tyres on it's very often declared as being your fault (obviously common sense needs applied to this too Its pathetic, a Slovak who works for me was amused at how the weather was being reported like its the end of the world!

). The use of winter tyres is great and coupled with the fact that the authorities know how to deal with snow (not just a sprinkling which often puts the UK on near standstill), I'm talking several inches to much larger levels are quickly dealt with (normally advance salting etc)...now coming towards the end of my 3rd year living in Aachen I can safely say the UK is far, far behind our european counterparts when it comes to dealing with such conditions.
