As always I am relying on the PH faithful to settle a pub debate. So here it is-

You are alerted in the middle of the night to an intruder in your house, you go down to the lounge to find the scrote digging through your desk drawers. You live in a nice big house with plenty of swinging room. You have a baseball bat, he has a carving knife. Who has the advantage? Would you be better off with a knife yourself? What about the other way round?

Argument started as a result of two fellas who have respectively a bat and a knife by their beds for such emergencies. Outside of the obvious 'stay upstairs and call the police' who is in a better position if faced with hostile intruders?

The one with the most training!

One man with a knife will kill another man with a bat, but another man with a bat will be untouchable by a knife fighter.

Get a gun.

sorry? You hear noises, get your gun and find yourself in your daughters doorway. There you see your kid in bed and a bad guy approaching her, he sees you and stops. You shoot him?

I never get the "i'd do time for my family" theory.....the last thing your family want is a hero in jail!

Stairgates, the great equaliser wink

I can open them one handed while carrying a wriggling toddler in the dark, can a burglar open them...?

4 acres and a shovel. A much better equaliser.

To put it in simple terms its about range (point beats edge)

So a 10ft lance should do the trick.

Unless of course the intruder knows what hes doing and get past the lance point.

Suprise is the best form of attack so sneak up on him and doink him over the head.

Remember to cut one of his fingers off as a reminder.

From Casino:

"While I was tryin' to figure out why the guy was sayin' what he was sayin', Nicky just hit him. No matter how big a guy might be, Nicky would take him on. You beat Nicky with fists, he comes back with a bat. You beat him with a knife, he comes back with a gun. And you beat him with a gun, you better kill him, because he'll keep comin' back and back til one of you is dead."

These silly, dangerous, willy-waving posts crop up here from time to time.

The reactionary gap for a bladed weapon is roughly 21 feet, ie, the knifeman can cover that distance and inflict fatal wounds before his opponent can even react, let alone swing a bat. Have you ever seen proper knife wounds? Not nice. Any sort of swinging waepon is useless in street-fights or home confrontation.

Call the Police, stay upstairs where you can better defend yourself, and protect your family (if they are all asleep up there too...)

Stick to the pub-talk, threads like this can result in someone being killed.

Show off, I'll stick to the bat biggrin

On a serious note though, interesting point re the 21ft and you're definately right re staying upstairs.
If you know the burglar is there, you prolly are imaging him with a weapon, so it might not be 21 feet.

That may be a good point.
But yer assuming the burglar is a rock hard bd.
Usually they're not.

I came home to find a burglar in my house.
I only knew he was there cos the dog was going mental.
(Aparently she's jumped at him as he came in the window, she ended up outside with him inside)
I went in, she was halfway up the stairs growling like a nutter.
So I grabbed a hammer and went upstairs.
The burglar locked himself in the bathroom and wouldn't come out.

He got away in the end. The police took 25 minutes to arrive even though I told them I had a burglar actually in the house at the time.
Good one lads.

The only compensation was the dog bit the copper when he finally decided to show up. smile

I've seen many, many stab wounds mate, more than one fatal, and not one of them had been inflicted by a 'hard man', in fact, the complete opposite.

The thing you are supposed to do is make him tea and biscuits, and politely tell him you will phone the police, but not to worry, he will have enough time for a 2nd cuppa. rolleyes

Personally, I would approach him from behind, and fit the baseball bat over him in no uncertain terms.

Interesting that people think they can 'sneak up' on a burglar. How exactly? He's not going to hear you in the completely quiet house? wink

Aside from running away, what's the most effective way to protect yourself from a knife?
