...you didn't need the money and/or you could live without any cash while you retrained or worked your way up the ladder?

I've hit the big 40 now and am far too embedded in what I do for a living to make a change now. I was talking to Mrs NL about this over the weekend and we both agreed that, if we didn't need the cash or had our time again, we'd actually do something completely different to the career's we find ourselves in.

So, what would you do? My list included farmer, pilot, marine biologist, photographer, restaurateur and racing driver. I couldn't add male porn star and Mrs NL would know I was pushing the boat out with that one wink

Is this something you could realistically do or just your fantasy/dream job?

It should be something you can realistically do without the need for cash and plenty of training, if required. For example, if you're 3ft 6, there's not much you can do to become a pro basketball player wink

Good call smile I have a PPL, but would love to have gone the whole way and become a commercial pilot just to fly those sea planes between the Maldavian islands biggrin

I would have said an Escort.... but after reading one account of 'Batman surprise bum sex' where a gay assailant was waiting in a wardrobe, it slightly changed my outlook.

It's not all flying between beautiful islands you know.

I go to the Maldives a lot with work. I know a few of the air taxi pilots, there are a few younger ones who loiter around the Hulhule airport island hotel bar trying to pick up stewardesses from the airlines that stay there. I saw one bloke the other night trying to convince a hostie that he ought to stay with her as he'd "missed the last boat back to the main island". I've seen him use the line loads, it works for him all the time. hehe

I'd start a really good music venue, open during the day to sell CDs and merchandise etc, and at night to have bands and DJs on.
I'd let the space out to local bands to practice in for minimum outlay, and perhaps even build a little studio to record them if space permitted.

Very unrealistic. Can't even spell McDonald's, you'd never get in! hehe

Au contraire; surely the inability to spell the name of the world's largest fast-food producer would be a prerequisite to obtaining employment therein?

Slight twist on this: If I could do it without the long term periods away from home, plus a salary more like my current one, I'd join something like the RAF to muck about with planes.

Unfortunately, they want to pay you nothing, and post you off somewhere random for six months at a time - I want a more 9-5 style version wink

Blimey, you don't want much! I would have been happy with being short enough to pass the medical.

£40k ish for an average engineer no? if thats small beer then fair play, especially with a full pension earned before 40.

for me, i'd be either:

architect
furniture designer
helicopter pilot - FAA junglie/SAR
restaurateur - japanese
marine salvage blokey
houseboat builder in NL
offshore engineer/design engineer
watsan engineer - 3rd world
pirate

looking to do one of the above. only two of them are really out of the question - can't be arsed training for 7yrs to be an architect and too old to be a junglie!

Now then, pop star, film star and Premiership footballer don't count you see. You could say singer, actor or footballer, but there's no more guarantee you'll get to the top than there is for anyone else smile

Them's the rules wink
