Hi,

I am currently looking for a puppy. I have approached a couple of breeders by email, and only 1 has come back so far. The litter is due in Feburary. BUT... looking at the link to the breeders website the stud dog was born in January 2009, which means he was only 11 months when the mating took place. Is this usual practise, my previous dogs have been sired by 5 year olds. What I am a bit concerned of is that the dog isn't fully matured phyisically or mentally, or is this just being me overcautious?

Depends a lot on the breed.
Smaller breeds can be mature at a younger age than large breeds.

With our Irish Wolfhounds we wouldn't normally consider breeding before 18 months. Usually because the dog is not fully grown until then and you can't see what they will turn out like.

Yeah, they are a realtivly large breed. A large Munsterlander, so not as large as yours...

Still a large breed though, so I would say that 18 months would be a better age. 11 months may not be a problem it's just difficult to judge the qualities of the stud dog before he's fully mature.
There are probably other genetic disorders that cannot be tested for at that age too.

Dont discount rehoming a dog, there are so many lovely dogs in kennels that would love a family and home

No I was planning on rehoming, but my mum's dog would have trouble accepting adult dogs, so it would have to be a pup and the breed that I am looking for is not a common breed, so not often found at rescue centres. I have sent an application form to the munsterlander rescue, where they would probably end up.

Generally felt that males shouldn't be used as sires until approx 18 months old. Small breeds 12 months acceptable. But 18 months is better. How old is the moher and how many litters has she had. She should have had at least one preferablty 2 seasons between litters and prob shouldn't be less than 2 yrs (for the breed) for first litter or over 5 for a first litter.

Munsterlanders nice dogs, don't see many but did have some one who bred a litter in my area, she used to take all pups to local green, unfortunately didn't know her name etc

Thanks g3rrd, I contacted them on Saturday, just waiting for a reply. I have decided not to go with this litter, I would always be looking for problems with the pup and would never forgive myself if the pup had any medical conditions which might have even been remotly linked to the sire. If anyone knows any breeders, please let me know either by the thread or pm if you prefer.

The bh is 4 years old, she has had at least 1 litter, but I would think she has had more than that.

Not necessarily, if the owner of the bh is caring/ responsible she may not have been bred from more than once before, it is just a bit disappointing that she has been linked up with a sire that is really a bit too young in an ideal world.

The sire is hers as well. I think she breeds a hell of a lot by what is says on her website, she has 8 bhes and 2 dogs currently and her main stud dog seems to have sired alot of litters, which is common for good dogs.

Unfortunately! In a very short time scale it can and does completely bugger up the gene pool of many a once healthy breed frown
