I've heard of him, and I look like something out of a Gilette ad from the early 90s, so she'll almost certainly know.

marc jacobs is quite a big name designer, more of an american thing, but hes quite high up in terms of designers etc.

so yes she'll probably have a decent idea of the cost and who he is.

I have nothing helpful to contribute, other than to say I am also entirely "at sea" when trying to procure presents for the Mrs, and so I feel your pain.

My latest strategy is to go to Boots and assess each of the staff based on the degree of orangeness. The least orange member of staff is then tasked with providing advice on what might be a good choice. It's quite difficult, so i reckon i need a colour template like you get in B&Q for choosing paint.

Anyway, best of British and all that.

I ended up buying one of those 50ml bottles in Fenwicks on Sunday ... mainly because the girl selling it was cute as a button and wearing a short skirt.

This Marc Jacobs character is the wife's favourite designer, she has three handbags and a couple of pairs of shoes with his name on. Her bloody collection is worth more than my car, that's just wrong. Anyway, not one of the best known, but those interested in names will know the name if you know what I mean... It's good stuff, not as recognisable as your Guccis and Armanis but I reckon that gives it a touch more class.

Am I alone in thinking the important thing about perfume is what it smells like? Not how expensive it is or the brand-name? confused

My sense is that opinion is divided according to gender on the subject.

My girlfriend and sis-in-law both love Mark Jacobs perfume. You've done well and your wife will (or damn well should!) appreciate it. thumbup

I know the perfume you mean as I almost bought the same for my OH.

I went perfume shopping with 2 mates which is a recommended experience. We stood at the counter in Boots, collared 3 attractive female members of staff and then proceeded to work through 29 testers.

The staff were good sports, even when I was asking for perfume that smelt like a '5.7 litre Ford Windsor V8 with Weber Fuel Injection' at tickover.

Eventually bought DKNY, which smelt the least crap.

In one of the Vegas malls, the Marc Jacobs shop had a sale on whilst we were other there.

Mrs f13ldy emerged with 2 handbags and some other tat that equalled the cost of our trip.

I'm assuming you wife is into named products etc.

If she is anything like me and ignorant re: designer products etc then prob not so good as I've never heard of him.

However I would appreciate the thought and effort so if I liked the scent then I'd be very happy.

I have a bottle of Marc Jacobs 'Daisy' sitting in the study beside me as I write. My Mrs uses it as air freshener when I smoke in here. I think she's either 'Old money' or feckin mad with my cash.

My Mrs loves the stuff.....

Still every time I get some for her I get big smiles in return - which is always worth it

Yes, he's very much a designer of today. Makes expensive handbags and nice perfumes (o/h wears Daisy by Marc Jacobs).

Trust me, she will know the value.

Lola is Marc Jacob's most recently released scent and you're right about the ridiculously oversized rubber flower thing they call a lid. I'd put it up there with brands like DKNY. He's also the creative director of stupidly high-end designer brand Louis Vuitton.

Yup...Marc Jacobs handbags are made for drooling on. Before they chuck you out of Selfridges.

She'll know and appreciate.
