Best place to sell an engagement ring
Discussion
Excuse my ignorance, I know nothing about jewellery at all.
I have in my possession, a diamond engagement ring which is apparently of value (£600 - £1,000 possibly)
It has a certificate which states the diamond quality and relevant stuff.
I don't use ebay any more following a tosser who broke something I sold and now is trying to get his money back, and I probably wouldn't sell something like this there anyway.
I would prefer not to sell it privately as it would show that I don't know much about it, would prefer to sell to a reputable shop so that when it is sold, it is sold and no idiots coming back saying "it's not what I wanted" or whatever.
Cash4Gold etc, I don't believe they are good value for a second.
So is there such a thing as a reputable jeweller that takes these kinds of things, or is there a better way to sell it?

Where in the UK? If in the North then Berrys in Leeds are quite good..I have in my possession, a diamond engagement ring which is apparently of value (£600 - £1,000 possibly)

You might find that a part-ex would work better if you fancy a new watch or similar?

If it's retail price is £600 it's trade value is probably £150....
Like Opticians and Bookies, you never see a jeweller going to work on a bike.........
Oh yeah I am totally prepared to lose a fair bit, in fairness it is not gaining me any money siting where it is right now so I might as well get whatever I can.Like Opticians and Bookies, you never see a jeweller going to work on a bike.........

Hawk it round a few jewellers in your local area.that's what me and my partner did with our old engagement/wedding rings.the bids varied from 300 to 900 for the job lot but in the end it was well worth doing
Good plan
Do most high street dealers buy as well, and would they all need to take it away for valuation or would the diamond certifiatey thing be enough?
Bear in mind that the standard retail mark-up on jewellery is 100%. More at anywhere like Tiffany / Boodles etc.
If the ring is in unworn condition, take it along to anywhere which offers secondhand jewellery for sale and haggle hard. Research the price of a similar ring and aim for 50% of the retail price of that.
Anyone you offer the ring to will attempt to take the piss of course. Especially if they sense a sad story / a need for cash.

Plan to spend a morning or afternoon researching who in your local area sells secondhand stuff and how much similar items are advertised at.you will only get a fraction of this but it gets rid of the item and gives you a bit back for something that otherwise would just sit in a drawer for years

Excellent. That's the plan for the new year sorted then Simpo Two said:
Stand outside a jeweller's shop and nobble happy-looking couples heading for the door?
I'm in a similar position (the ring that is, not outside the door); mine's brand new, unworn and platinum.
I hope the word nobble is different in your mental dictionary than it is in mine... I'm in a similar position (the ring that is, not outside the door); mine's brand new, unworn and platinum.
