The last couple of years we have had a mate come round on Christmas Day.

He works in football so is miles away from friends and family at this time of year.
Didn't know him particularly well until talking to him in the local pub a few days before Christmas Day a couple of years ago, found out he would be spending Chistmas alone.
I gave him our number and said if he was at a loose end he was more than welcome to join us for the day.
Didnt think anything would come of it but on Christmas Day morning he called asking if it was still ok to come round - which of course it was.

Not sure what he made of our families over exuberence at party games but seems a good time was held by all.

He still talks about it and seems ever so grateful that the offer was made.

He has since moved to a different area so will kinda miss the guy this year!

Just a quick note to other PH'ers, if there is anybody to help in your area this year, ask them. They will really appreciate it.

smile

Yeh, my housemate.

"see you next week I'm going to my Mums for Christmas, by the way see if you can get a plumber out to fix the boiler"

Was what I shouted at him from the window of my car as I drove off.

Thought you'd never ask, what time shall we get there?

Do we need to bring anything?

BTW, I'm a vegetarian, if you could knock up something special for me, thanks.

wink

Yup - was going to be on the continent but Eurostar's monumental cock ups have put paid to that.

But then, I treat my local's staff like family anyway.

(Swear at them, get drunk, fall asleep etc)

Last year was one of the worst Christmas of my life. I was alone and had to be back in the UK, London to get my US visa sorted, so I was back at the empty house in London I grew up with with no furnature and only memories of my deceased mother and the Christmas before when my mother was still living.

This year my ex land lord who have been like family to me in Chicago- have invited me up there for Christmas which was very nice and generous of them. So I totally agree with you. Perhaps one day I'll do the same for someone else.

This is my first Christmas as a singleton - which incidentally is fine.

Both my parents are dead, and I have no family. Friends of course know this, and although I have plenty of invitations to their Christmases, I have to say that I'd rather be on my own than a spare part at at someone else's.

I've had to lie to each to say that I'm engaged somewhere else: how difficult does society make it to prefer to be alone than to fill one's life with forks and faces?

Well, there are plenty of alcoholics/smackheads lying about in the streets with bull terriers tied to their ankles...always someone worse off than yourself. smile

Another one here for that, the first one as a singleton for 18 years. First I looked on the bright side and thought how much cheaper it will be but then saying that it's nice to have someone to buy things for.

It's only one day anyway.

I actually enjoyed my first single Christmas....after 15 years of Mr 'I hate Christmas', I got to enjoy it for once. But then I was lucky, in that I did have my son for part of the day (Christmas morning this year cloud9 )

That's nice, I will be doing my uncle paul rounds in the morning though so that's the nearest I'll get. Kids do make a difference at Christmas, well the younger ones anyway!

14 years for me. Anyhoo... best stay sober and get an early night since it will be an early start on Boxing Day for making loud exhaust noises around London wink

Well I hope you have a most splendid day, sounds like Boxing day is going to be better anyway. I'm sure you can get away with a few cheeky ones on Christmas day.
