Planning on buying an iPod Nano direct from Apple, so I can have it engraved free of charge. I've heard it's a good idea to have it engraved in case it gets stolen, but with what? Just my name? Would my postcode be a bit boring/going too far? Or would a funny saying be more appropriate, in which case, what?

"Demo model, please do not remove from store"

"100% Microsoft free"

The only problem with that is when you come to sell it.

Is there anything they wouldn't put on?

The NikeID email trail where they refused to put Sweatshop on rings a bell...
http://shey.net/niked.html
Though I've no idea whether that actually happened...

Is there really any point? Chances of it getting stolen is slim, if it is stolen the chances of getting it back are slimmer, if someone does steal it then sell it, whoever buys it won't care what is engraved on the back

The majority of people I know have an iPod of some description. A lot have a Nano. I want a silver one, so not an unusual colour. If mine went missing, and then a little while later someone I know got a silver Nano, I'd have a very hard time proving it was mine because they're so popular. If, however, it has a unique engraving on the back, that's pretty good evidence!

I can understand where you're coming from, however as engraving as free I think I might as well.

In that case surely anything will suffice. you take a photo of it and then you'll be able to prove it was yours.

A lot of worry though for £115 gadget

Replcaement back cases are not expensive and slip on covers are peanuts. Nice idea for personalisation as a gift but realisticly offers no theft deterent IMO.

Surely you could just take a note of the serial number and check your friends one if this happened? Also, not just on the case - electronically too.

TBH, if you have pikey friends, maybe find new mates??

Cheers
