My neighbour's daughter (who lives somewhere else, and whose husband legged it abroad a while back) just asked me if I would lie for her, and say that her friend, who is "coming into the country", would be living at my house for a couple of weeks.

She wanted me to say this, as I'm not on any benefits, but she is, and so is her mother (who is a widowed pensioner). Apparently if you've got a friend living with you, who applies for housing benefit, you lose your benefits or something.

Apparently, "it won't affect you [me]". It fking will, I'm the one whose taxes are being used to pay for you, and your friend. FFS, she's a healthy mid-40s woman who could quite easily get a job.

I can't quite believe the cheek. I told her I'd happily shovel snow from her mum's garden path or anything like that, but scamming fking benefits? FFS.

It hadn't crossed my mind to do that, in fact she came back and apologised, worried that that's what I'd do. The reality is her mother is a lovely old woman who isn't scamming, and my neighbour, and isn't worth upsetting.

fk me though, I can't believe the cheek.

How would you feel if another neighbour did for her what you wouldn't?

Would you report her, or turn a blind eye to a benefits cheat?

I like it too. As soon as I work out what it means, I might use it myself

As has been said, in New Labour's Stasi Britain, you can report her completely anonymously.

Not really. If she gets found out (if she does it), the blame will now be squarely on me, as I'm the one "who knows", and I'd rather have a good relationship with this neighbour.

Could you not report her for some other random form of benefit fraud, safe in the knowledge that even if she hasn't done that, they'll probably find what she has done in the course of their investigation, including this particular item?

That way, when the inspectors tell her she's been reported anonymously, it will be for something she has no reason to connect to you.
