Dumb question, but I just received some money into my Paypal account, first thing I have ever sold. biggrin

So, when I buy something now using my Paypal does it take it from the money that is in my account, or does it take it from my credit card?

I can't seem to see anything in the acres of fine print that explains this, only how to transfer money to a bank account.

It will give you the option of which to use when you go to pay.

In fact, it will use your PayPal account first - if you have £50 in there and the item you buy is £100, it will take the first £50 out of your PayPal account and the remainder from your credit card.

It will actually take the remainder out of your bank account - you have to manually select a credit card if you want it to be used.

Paypal don't know my bank account details, just my credit card. I've had the account for years, but only ever bought with it.

Also, you can withdraw the money to your bank account (you obviously have to specify one first). This is what i do if there is any large amount of money in there, i've heard too many stories about paypal taking back funds to trust them with my money.

If you have more than one currency (I have ££ and $$ for instance) you can shuffle it across so it doesn't take money from your card if you do it first before paying, i.e have $100 and £100, need to pay $125 - move some of the ££ across first, it doesn't do this automatically.

yes

I only ever leave £1 in there and transfer money as and when.

If you sell things on ebay and someone raises a dispute, or something happens, they can freeze your funds and it is sometimes hard to get them to unfreeze them, even after the dispute has ended rolleyes

i also used to do this, but when i sold a perfectly good laptop, the buyer claimed it was not as advertised when it was, sent it back to me and raised a dispute.

Paypal put my account into arrears, froze it and said i had to pay it back or they would take legal means to reclaim the money.

That's the wonders of the e-bay sadly. But most transactions are fine. Or at least used to be.
