I live in a wonderful part of the country (Poole) but fancy a complete change of scenery - and one that's not so ridiculously expensive propertywise . Only have myself, girlfriend and dog to worry about and I work from home.

Where, in the UK, offers terrific scenery, walks, nature, snow at Xmas and some community spirit but where you are also able to enjoy the cafe/restaurant facilities of a lively town/city not too far away? Fantastic driving roads would be the icing on the cake! smile

York offers all of this. I'd live there but the commute to London would be a right pain (though there are people, amazingly, who do it)

I'm in Yorkshire for a wedding end Jan so plan to use the time to explore a little too! York will be a nice day out cheers!

Then going to go up the west coast of Scotland - that has a pull for me for some reason!

The areas surrounding Dartmoor or exmoor might fit most criteria.

May I suggest a quick Google for Lincolnshire Wolds.

Cheap as chips for property in comparison to the south, lovely scenery and a decent selection of towns nearby. Oh and you will certainly have your icing on the cake as anyone who as driven in the area around Cadwell Park will testify biggrin

Only downside is that does feel a bit out of the way, Nottingham, Sheffield, Leeds are all a good hour away and if you have a professional job it may prove difficult to change should you wish to do so.

Really? I thought the house prices were relatively high in York, not to mention the ring road traffic is a nightmare!

Having said that, I've not lived in York for 4 years so things may have changed...

Mold, Flintshire, North Wales.

5 UNESCO World heritage sites within an hours drive. Snowdonia on the doorstep, but 20 minutes to Chester and under an hour for Liverpool/Manchester.

Horseshoe Pass or Evo triangle for driving.

Moved here in March and love it.

The north east corner around Aberdeen isn't actually that bad for rain, and you're only an hour away from some cracking roads, and 2 hours from some even better roads via the earlier mentioned cracking roads.

OK the locals are a bit miserable, but it's bearable. If it's scenery and great roads you're after, Scotland has just about everywhere else beaten. Plus, with a population of 5 million, once you get north of Glasgow the traffic dies away and the great roads are lightly policed
