The last couple of hours we noticed the lights in the house are a little dull.
A quick call to the electricity company revels that there is a problem on tghe lines locally and they are on the case.
So far so good. Yet many of my neighbours have still got outside lights and Christmas lights on. They must surely notice the drop in voltage. You would expect intelligent folk to switch unnecessary lights off. I guess they must be as dim as the lights are becoming.

Switching PC off now it might help a little.

I thought having more things on would affect the current only, so the amount of lights on wouldn't make a difference?

Most Christmas lights use a fraction of the power of normal incandescent bulbs.

If there's a current restriction on the main feed line, then someone putting the kettle on will have far greater effect on the available distribution than lighting.

If it's low voltage then nothing anyone can do will make the slightest difference, other than the men sent to fix it.

Excess current draw will pull the voltage down if there is a problem with the lines, I doubt some fairy lights will matter.

Unlike the other, I'm not going to take the piss out of a simple, single letter typo.

Having said that, it's a bit harsh to blame him, he was assaulted on xmas day you know...

I the electric board are dealing with it, then it's a fault in the auto transformer that converts 11kV to 230V.

The current being drawn won't make any difference.

You don't seriously believe that most people understand even the first thing about electricity? Many people would faint at the sight of Ohm's law.

Here, knock yourself out:

Then have a read of this, if you think people turning a few lights off will make a difference:

This is a wind up isn't it ?

and here in lies the problem with most of the population...

I'd lay good money on the majority of the populace having a qualified comment on Jedward and other X-Factor/Big Brother non-essentials. Yet ask them to explain the simple relationship between voltage and current and frankly you'll get no where?

Why? Because people don't give a st.. and why should they? Well the fact that it really does make a difference to your/their life is lost on them... it's someone else's problem...

Dumb, dumb and dumber... that's the way they want us.

Just a thought, is your neighbour using his arc welder, especially if he's making a cup of tea ?

You forgot to mention that the 'single unshaded 40 watt bulb' needs to be under the duvets to provide any warmth.

Am I the only one that is freezing his tits off at the moment - even with the light bulb under a duvet?

If they hadn't banned 100 watt bulbs you could be a lot warmer.
