I thought we'd get away with it this time, after the last fiasco when half the population forgot basic maths and common sense and decided it was a new millennium at the start of the 2000th year.

But no, this morning Radio One have been repeatedly informing us that revellers were "braving the cold to enjoy new years eve and celebrate the start of a new decade".

Listen fkstick, there are TEN years in a decade, and this is 2010, so the START of the tenth year!!!!!!

It's simply a 10 year period?

Surely your logic only applies if you started counting from one rather than zero?

Not this nonsense again. How old were you in your tenth year?

How old are you at your first birthday? 0 or 1? Today represents the first day of the 2011th year - 2010 years and 1 day, so first day of the new decade.

Ok, so there was never a year 0, but then there was never a year 1 or 2 or 3 either as the current calendar wasn't introduced for many centuries.

In my tenth year on this mortal coil I was 9, and I didn't start celebrating a new decade. At the end of my tenth year, I celebrated my 10th birthday, and start my eleventh year.

Exactly, so 2009 was the tenth year of the decade.

Blimey, bet all your school-mates thought you were a bit odd then? Celebrating your 10th birthday when you turned 11? biggrin

Did it ever occur to you what the word 'Birthday' actually means?

I think you will find that your first birthday was exactly that (although, in theory, I guess you were actually around about 9 months old already - give or take)... laugh

Wait a sec. When you're born, you're zero years old. After 1 year, you're 1. At the end of the 2nd year, you're 2. At the end of your 10th year, you're 10.

Born--1 year past (1 years old)--2--3--4--5--6--7--8--9--10 years past (10 years old)<- 1 decade
--2001 years past (2001 years old)--2002--2003--2004--2005--2006--2007--2008--2009--2010... <- 1 decade

You make a good point, King Herald... Fing is, do you call the '80s the eighties or the eighty-one-ies, King Herald.

So at the end of your tenth year you've lived for a decade - your tenth year is from your ninth birthday to your tenth birthday. You've been 9.1 years old, 9.2 years old, 9.3 years old... until on your 10th birthday you've lived for a decade. So it's the START of 2010 that marks the end on the previous decade, not the end of 2010.

We did start at one - it went 1BC to 1AD overnight without having a year zero.

You celebrate you first birthday after one year of life, so you celebrate your tenth, after ten full years on the earth. Next day you are in your eleventh year.

Or did you have your first birthday party the day you were born? Did you get 'One Today' cards at the hospital?? confused

So are you saying that the year 2000 was part of the 1990s?!

Because that is what your logic is alluding to.

This reminds me of radio program in Saudi Arabia.
It was their version of University Challenge.
The question was "In what country were the 19whatever Lake placid winter Games held"

The contestant was unable to answer and the host allowed them to confer.
After a 20 seconds of mumbling they asked "what year is it now"

Absolutely truesmile

In their defence Saudis almost exclusivly used their own calendar at that time.

Being one year old is not the same as having your first birthday technically...

OK, let's try this another way: If you were born at 00:01 on 1st Jan 2000, how many years old would you be on 1st January 2010?

I make that 10 years = 1 decade ...

I rest my case whistle

Feel free to continue living with some different form of calendar to the Gregorian one the rest of us work to wink

and PS. There WAS a year zero... (0000 AD) It started, by definition when christ was born... It is only much more recently that someone decided that he was actually born on 25th December, and then started the new year a week later.
