I'm Godfather tomorrow to my best mate's little boy. I'm wearing a charcoal grey suit with a very subtle square pattern. Are brown shoes acceptable with this? They look good and I have a nice brown watch, but is there some sort of faux pas wearing this combination?

I want to be, just for the day. Preferably the one shagging Cheryl Cole.

If your shoes match your belt it doesn't matter what colour they are - oxblood has always been my preference

Brown shoes wouldn't be my first choice with a charcoal grey suit but it wouldn't be a faux pas either. Brown shoes look better with a light grey suit and I'd suggest black shoes if you have any appropriate ones.

But, if it has to be brown shoes, then go for it. Just make sure you wear a brown belt too.

Isn't he a 'sponge'? hehe

Brown shoes are 'okay' until 6pm, I think. Never great, though, with a suit.

I'm sure JAYB someone with more sartorial intuition will be along.

I'm only 30 so I'm not really a PH traditionalist but I will still listen to any advice and I do have black, I just think the brown suit me better.

Unless your fellow attendees are equally as clueless, then brown shoes are a no-no. I find this lack of adherence to classic tailoring and sartorial elegance quite disturbing. Oh one more thing, if you haven't already, make sure you remove the label off the cuff rofl

I note that brown shoes with a charcoal suit seems to pass in certain circles nowadays (blame the England rugby world cup team in 2003 for starting this 'trend').

However I saw a man in Cobham today wearing this combo and couldn't help but think how ghastly it looked, and how, 2003.

Where what you think looks good and as said already, make sure the belt matches. Don't listen to this lot - I bet most of them think a Subaru rally jacket and bob hat is the height of fashion anyway. wink
