Went back to blighty today for a few days to top up on Englishness (it's been a while). Get to dover and my phone receives an email with a photo from my security DVR showing two strange people standing looking in my front door. the front garden has a 2m high wall around it so they were protected from veiw.

Called the police and neighbours and luckily nothing was broken into or missing. Got to sister's house and looked at the video footage via the internet and sure enough the little bds can be seen climbing over the wall and doing a tour of the house "casing" the place. They go down the basement steps and have a good tug on the armoured door and look into the basement windows.

At this point I am wishing very much that I could be there with some blunt dental instruments.

Anyway, the alarm is on and the neighbour has left signs all over the place saying that they are being filmed so if they come back this evening hopefully they will get the idea. The police were very helpful and somewhat amused by my security system.

This is the first time that the video system has been called upon and I think it came through with flying colours. Now if I could only get Slingplayer mobile to work on the iPhone with 3g Unrestrictor things will be even better.

Watch out for your property folks, get an alarm fitted at least. These bds are out there.

It does, but what happens when the power goes off for any lenght of time?

I've got a few IR gubbins scattered round the place with battery back up, however nothing beats a load of geese (OK, not so ideal for you town folk, LOL) and a couple of big muts that like nothing more than unwanted scum being nosey.

Still, I hope all's OK and that you've got their mug shots recorded if need be..

I have a rather powerful rack mount UPS which the DVR and internet router is connected to. It can last for ours with this. The cameras are on a Yuasa backup battery as is the alarm system (obviously). This also lasts for many hours.

I get a message sent to my phone if the power goes off.

If ever a more professional type of scrote manages to find and cut the telephone line, the alarm goes off and the GSM comms module in the alarm will send me notification of this also. This would result in an instant call to neighbours/police.

Dogs etc are all very well but they mess about with the external PIRs and give false alarms unless you fix them low down and send a beam parallel with the ground. This leaves them vulnerable to attack.

You also have to feed them and take them for walks. (the dogs not the detectors).
I have a mixture of GJD D-tect2 and D-Tect3 external PIRs but also have motion detection on the cameras configured.

The lastest addition will be some speakers which will play a recorded message to any intruders telling them to smile and wave at the police on the cameras. smile

I shall be leaving a copy of the video on DVD with the police when I get back and hopefully they will recognise the little bds.

My husband put video cameras up around our house that could be monitored easily, sadly the day before we moved in some sh*t nicked them! although I have to say that it did make me laugh biggrin

All upgraded again now though and very handy to know when the dogs want to come in, with two Dobermanns you wouldn't think I'd need a security system!

Good to hear you've got some way of protecting your property while you're away.

Could you not rig up some sort of reverse panic room that seals the burglars in to await your arrival?

'Illegal imprisonment' I'm afraid - burglars go free, you go to jail.

You can get fairly good home automation systems now which add to this sort of setup relatively easily and cheaply, and aren't that hard to retro fit.

Just done a project for a client where if the camera camera picks up movement it e-mails him the picture, then depending on the time of day and if it's dark or not runs a routine to turn on lights in certain rooms in a sequence with time delays that looks like someone walking through the house, open the bedroom curtains, floodlight the outside of the house. 90 seconds later the stereo in the Lounge and bedroom comes on
