How do other couples split the household chores? At the moment I work two and a half days a week and spend the other two and a half days doing EVERYTHING. This allows my o/h and me to spend our weekends doing stuff at leisure. If he wants to spend a day 'messing about' in the garage, he can. No problem. He has now decided I should get a full-time job and says he'll do his portion of the housework/cleaning/washing/ironing/shopping at the weekend. So this means no more spending our weekends doing bugger all if we want. I have no problem with getting a full-time job but I just know our weekends will turn into massive arguments about who does what. Me doing 'The Mental' no doubt. Solution?

Agreed! I pay a nice lady to do all my (and the GFs) washing and ironing, we just about handle the cleaning ourselves.

I think £20 would cover about 3 hours. I spend a damn site longer keeping this house clean, ironing, shopping, cooking etc.

Does that mean it takes you 15+ hours every week to keep your house clean? Isn't that quite excessive?

He cooks, I do everything else, try and do a bit each day before he gets home for work, we try not to do it at weekend

It can work, it just means that you both have to do bit of housework in the evenings or you will end up having to clean the whole house every weekend.

Getting a cleaner is a good idea, but it depends on your standards of clean, your's or your cleaners may be higher IFYSWIM.

It still means your time is spent keeping the place tidy, and of course all the washing, ironing, cooking, food shopping, then the bigger cleaning items of windows, doors, nooks & crannys, inside bins, ovens, fridges etc still all lie to you to do in your spare time. Is it worth it?

I personally think if you are both working full time and sharing the bills equally then the chores should be shared equally. If (like you now) one of you doesn't work full time then that person should be soley responsible for the household stuff. It all comes down to your OH ability to do as he says he will! Can he put his cleaning cloth where his mouth is? hehe

I once had a cleaner at my business who charged me £20 for a LOT of work each day. I just thought he was really desperate for work.

Unfortunately, the police then visited to say he was a convicted child-molestor who used this ruse to gain access to businesses where children might be present.

He never came back, sadly, as there were about 10 angry black-belts who were looking forward to his next visit. At least he was back in jail, instead.

I must say though, there is clean, and there is clean- our house is just clean- kitchen gets done daily, tidy up a few times a week, clean bathroom and hoover once a week, I only polish once every 3 months- if that, iron as you need it as ironed stuff gets creased in drawers- so quite low maintenance

(once a month a room gets blitzed.)

ETA: my husbands version of clean is not my version of clean, so I tend not to let him do stuff- he can hoover well- so I normally get him doing that

Why does all this cleaning malarky have to be done at the weekends. Can't you BOTH do bit's and bob's after your dinner/tea? I do all the cleaning in my house and my O/H does the cooking. This works because

A. I don't trust him not to muck up the house/washing etc...
B. He does not trust me not to kill him with my cooking.

We still get time to do anything at the weekends.

Although I do work from home which helps.

Me and wifey both work full time.
I do the cooking, painting, decorating and jobs that require a penis, and she does the washing and the bulk of the cleaning.
By and large it works as I do stuff when she is cleaning so she thinks I am pulling my weight, even if I am in the garage organising my collection of screws.

Do the people of pistonheads split bills as well?

I pay all the bills and do the diy - only as I enjoy this, She does everything else - Simples smile.

Those are very strange cleaning products! Are you sure you got that right?

Never seen that with Kim and Aggie.

Don't forget a professional cleaner is likely to know a load of shortcuts that work, have better equipment and spend the 3 hours actually cleaning, no getting up watching an hours TV, realising the washing needs doing but so does the washing up, and it's lunch time. My parents had 3hours cleaning a week where 3 women came for an hour the cleaned a four bed house in that time, some rooms may have been on 2 week cycles depending on use and dirt but it works.
