For example when approaching a potential advertising client, lets say we are talking about Manchester United magazine, the target market would be Man U fans and thats pretty much it isn't it? Or am i being an utter cock nose and missing a key element out of my description?

This has face palm written all over it but i'm determined to not fk this up, even with my pathetic knowledge of football.

Think you have grasped the concept. Nobody else is going to be interested in reading such a targeted publication. Even supporters of the competition will have their own dedicated media (Club website or rival magazine) which will cover who they are playing. You would have to be some geek to read all the different team publications.

2010 is going down hill fast in terms of posts, at this rate next years PH annual will have half the book dedicated to dumb post.

And the answer to the question..mmmm, let me think, oh yea, football fans will buy a football magazine.

Think you used a bad example with Man Utd. Their 'fans' are like rats. One of the buggers within 3 metres of you!

No they wont, a Rangers fan will not buy a Celtic magazine, so your theory is incorrect. But thanks for sharing.

It looks stupid but what i'm thinking about is companies that advertise in these magazines are targeting a certain demographic aren't they, they don't give a st if they support Man U or Man City or what ever other football team. So its not as simple as just saying, well Man U Fans, mega LOLZ etc.

Fans - what segments are there? Ad hoc adult purchasers, diehard collectors, kids/children. Where are they based? All in Manchester? I doubt it, so where are the biggest selling areas? What portion of these are subscriptions vs store purchases?

What kind of person does the store purchase? Is it mum for the kids? Do you need to make it child friendly in a parents eyes? Or is it mainly adults?

Peripherals - competitive clubs will most certainly have a read, as will suppliers and those who want to supply to the club. Affiliated organisations, sponsors, stockholders, shareholders, players, players familys (and what about any player sponsors, if you have individual sponsorship deals, will they be checking that there is no great whacking advert for a competitor next to a player profile? and so on)

Get hold of the subscription for the current magazine and have a look at the demographics and stats for it.

I think that most footbally teams have their own "magazine" in terms of the programme. Deatils all the stories they are interested in and takes care of local targeted ads.

Most also have many fanzines.

many have webshyts

and fan webshyts

Others are Shoot!, Four Four Two and various titles with huge breasted lovelies in - like John Barnes.

What are you bringing to this football feast?

I have a similarly pathetic (if not more patheticer) knowledge of football, but I think I know where you're coming from. Whether or not I can offer any constructive response remains to be seen.

Hold the face palms for a second.....

Man Utd Magazine !
What is the demographic of the purchasers of the magazine? Low earning working class types? higher earning working clas / middle managament class?

Is it parents buying for kids?

Is Man Utd Magazine published abroad? If so, how many countries? What numbers are published?

The market may be 'man utd fans' but not all man utd fans buy the magazine and not all fans are from the same demographic.

Now try defining the Man U fan in terms of household income, household size, which supermarkets they use, what car they drive, what biscuits they eat, and so on.

Yes, but Man Utd fans are a strange breed. Remember most of them have no contact with Old Trafford, and their only contact with the club is via the media. So most of them lap up anything and everything. They rabidly consume anything with Man Utd printed on it, because they think it makes them more real.

Especially in Torquay and Guildford yes

which was kind of what i was getting at, but your version is much better worded.

I'm not dealing with the MUFC magazine, we deal with many i was just using it as an example to try and understand what sort of business this would entice to advertise within it as i would have thought that, as others have said, the fan base is fairly diverse.

I think Manchester United might be a bad example as, I gather, they traditionally have a very wide demographic of followers, from actual Mancs to city types in, well, the city and everything in between. Every time you see a Lenny Henry Comic Relief documentary from deepest, darkest Africa, there's always at least one little kid running round in a Man U shirt.
