My dad might move to between my step brother (effectively Nottingham) and I (effectively MK). so that's somewhere around Market Harborough.

They currently live in a small market town in wales and want to be able to recreate this 'being able to walk to the town but not get stabbed by hoodies' type living they're used to. ideally they'd be somewhere with some yokel shops like butchers etc not just chain stuff.

if anyone knows Olney just outside MK i think that's possibly the sort of place.

so needs to be as close as possible to notts and mk, detatched, garden can be on small side if not overlooked, 4 beds or i might convince them that 3 large beds is better than 2 large and 2 small ( rolleyes ) (!) double or at least oversized garage, ideally seperate lounge/dining/kitchen. i think we can get away with kitchen being biggish but not big enough to eat in...

so which nicish smallish town/large village has all this for as near to £300k as possible?

any ideas?

There's loads of villages around the Corby / Kettering area. Most of the villages and small towns outside the larger towns (Corby, Kettering, etc) are nice and quiet.
I've got elderly relatives in Desborough; the majority of the locals there are of retirement age from what i've seen!

Don't live in the area myself but have spent plenty of time there.

thank you. thing is i was just using olney as an example - it needs to be further north. fairly equidistant from us both. or ideally nearer step brother and his in-laws to be..(!)

Corby. It's got to be Corby - a quaint little fishing village on the coast of Northamptonshire.

Perfect.

How about stoke bruerne, bit nearer to MK than nottingham, but as a plus there is basically naff all there except for the canals and museum, so not many oiks, plus the bonus of the canals to walk around. Downside? full of touristy types in the summer walking along the canals.

And its full of flies throughout summer due to the canal!

Wasn't being rude, but only live 5 miles away- it's overrun in summer, otherwise quite pleasant (the boat pub is a firm favourite for a good drink- occassionally shoot just up the road)
