If a car driver past you and emits 80db, and then 2 cars drive past at 80db each, is it twice as loud?

So what if your engine and tire noise were 80db each from inside the car, and then you managed to make your engine totally silent?

Take a band with 2 guitarists as an example. They both have their amps set to the same volume. They both start playing the same thing and then one suddenly stops. The overall volume you are hearing doesnt change, you just hear one guitar instead of 2.

Same story with the engine. If the tyres and the engine are both 80db, and the engine becomes silent, it doesnt get quieter inside the car, you just stop hearing the engine.

Different frequencies and duration of the noise might also make you think the noise is louder.

Depends on exactly where the listener is. At points the sound pressure will get considerably higher and others they'll cancel and be less. Twice the volume I suppose is technically possible but for a fixed listener the increase will be nowhere near double on average.
