Hearing the story on the news yesterday about some middle aged blokes who went out onto an icy lake to 'feed the ducks' in the middle of the night, most probably pissed or drugged up (the location of said lake escapes me), and fell in, 2 of them died but 2 survived because they were rescued by someone who went out onto the ice and pulled them out of the water. I found myself first of all thinking how good it was that someone was prepared to risk their life to save those people, but also i did wander whether or not i would do the same if i was in that position. The conclusion i came to was that i probably wouldn't. I expect that makes me a bad person, but i cant help but think that its a case of natural selection - if these retards decide it is a good idea to do that, then why should I or anyone else risk their life in order to save them? Fair play to those who would, and maybe if it was different circumstances, i.e. somebody falling into an icy lake not due to pure stupidity but by accident or something, i would try. However for this bunch of idiots I really don't think i would have bothered. What do you lot think, would you have risked everything to save them?

I would take a considered opinion. If they looked panicky and an apparent danger then no. I did see three lads walking down the canal the other night and thought the same thing, don't think I am coming in after you!

I would like to think I would do everything I could, however having never been in a situation like that I don't know how I'd react.

Then again people know the dangers, it's beyond me they put their lives at risk doing such idiotic things at times.

Were about 10 kids running over the lake in Petersfield yesterday, until the Police turned up and they soon scarpered.

IMHO, anyone stupid enough to take such a risk instantly waives the right to be helped (or get sympathy) as soon as they make the decsion to do something so risky.

Having said that, I have no idea what I would do if faced with the reality.

IME me jumping in, compared to an overzealous member of the public usually has 2 different outcomes.
correct me if I am wrong, it appears you think that without training you should watch and provide help without going in?

No not at all - by all means jump in if you feel confident enough.

Just weigh up the dangers first.

If there was a hole in the ice 1ft by 1ft then I'd probably give it a miss. Chances of getting stuck under are too high.

I guess that was the one in/near Leicester? They interviewed a couple of chaps who helped rescue them and they said as they were edging their way out towards them they could hear the ice cracking.

I guess you never know until you're faced with it, but I'm pretty sure at that point I'd have been out of there if not before.

I know people say we're in H&S obsessed times, but I was taught you don't play on frozen ponds/lakes, end of.

Lemmings, it seems bad form to go against the grain of the thread

I personally would not have the guts to rescue people I didn't know in a situation like that, not sure what I would do about my dog though, I hope I would have the foresight to not act without thinking rather than leave my husband a widower with a dog

For me it would be a balance between the risk to myself and how strongly I felt about the person in danger. I know I shouldn't say this, but if I saw a ten year old kid in the OP's situation I would feel very differently to if it was a drunk chav. And in the extreme if it was a member of my family or a close friend then I would certainly try and rescue them regardless. I feel really bad saying that, but it's probably what would happen.

I was just about to say that I'd be more likely to go in after a dog, than a person!

The circumstances there are different though. He died trying to save his dog yes silly in the cold light of reasoning, but still tragic - as are the deaths of these people frown

Is this the story OP? http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/leicestershire/...

Yes i would go in after them. I cannot see how anyone could let someone in trouble just suffer. I would not be able to live with the guilt that I had been so selfish. Also, I would like a passing stranger to do the same for me if I was in trouble.

I agree with this.
