Received this via our RO from Paul Wilson (Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Cheshire RO) and thought it needed to be posted here to support a fellow Petrolhead & TVR owner in the traditional PH manner.

I wouldn't normally circulate this kind of thing through our group but I do think, on this occasion, it is valid as it affects one of our number. On behalf of Dave Wilkins (‘Chimbanana’ – yellow Chim 500), and others similarly affected, please kindly consider adding your voice to the following petition to the PM on the No 10 website before 11th January 2010 when it closes: -.

http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/CML-NICE/

As some of you are aware Dave suffers from chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML). Dave was originally diagnosed with CML in July 2005 and after initial treatment was put onto Imatinib (Glivec) a ‘first generation’ CML specific drug which served him relatively well until August last year when he became resistant to it. As a result of this Dave was then put onto a very new (and expensive) ‘second generation’ CML specific drug called Dasatinib.

Due to potential changes in the funding of available drugs by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) it is likely that they will in April withdraw the funding for two 'second generation' drugs, including Dasatinib that are very effective (in approx 50 % of cases) in the treatment of CML. Dave therefore, along with approximately 300 other patients faces the prospect of the withdrawal of this treatment and consequently a very poor prognosis for life in the future.

Dasatinib and Nylotinib (which cost approximately £30,000 pa per patient) are only prescribed for CML sufferers who have developed resistance to or who are intolerant of Imatinib following individual approval by the patient’s Primary Care Trust. Glivec costs approximately £15,000 pa per patient and the 'additional' cost to the NHS (not taking into account the very expensive and prolonged alternative treatments that may be possible for some e.g. bone marrow transplant) is therefore less than £5m and almost certainly cheaper than the alternatives including long term palliative care!

Please see the attached article on this matter that appeared in the Daily Mail on December 14 2009 for additional information.

Completing the petition online only takes a few minutes but even though the ‘Sign’ box has to be ‘checked’ an automated acknowledgement that is sent to your email address also has to be responded to in order for individual 'signatures' to be recorded.

Thanking you in anticipation of your much-valued support.

Appraisal Committee’s preliminary recommendations are listed here :

http://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/index.jsp?action=a...

I can't fathom it out, these seem to conflict with each other in this chaps case :

1.1 Dasatinib and nilotinib are not recommended for the treatment of chronic myeloid leukaemia in people for whom treatment with imatinib has failed because of imatinib resistance and/or intolerance.

1.2 People who are currently receiving dasatinib or nilotinib for the treatment of chronic myeloid leukaemia should have the option to continue therapy until they and their clinicians consider it appropriate to stop.

I'm off to sign it now smile
