There is no one more inventive when it comes to describing something than a bored military mind.

I've collected a few whilst working with various branches of the forces over the years. Here are a few of my, mainly Naval, favourites:

  • A Mark F - Used to describe a fat women. She's one size bigger than a Marquee.
  • Sperm Tank - The pot belly of a not very attractive women.
  • FISH & CHIPS - Fighting In Someone's House & Causing Havoc In Public Spaces.
  • Shuftyscope - A phrase used to describe any piece of technical equipment, used for having a shufty at something or someone.
  • Pid - A name given to someone who's stupid enough to not realise the origin of the name.
  • Egg Beater - A emergency drive system on a submarine.
Feel free to add some more.

When I joined up, my first divisional officer would write BUFFS on any poor quality staffwork I submitted. I liked this a lot, so I have taken it and used it many times on my own poor charges.

Simply means 'Buck Up For fk's Sake'

yes, FISH is a popular one. much better than the original line of fighting in built up areas (Fibua). Things in military naming parlance are always known by the narrowing down name system (i.e. what it is comes first, what kind it is, what colour, what it's use is). When I was a tank commander, the engine or heavy track links might sometimes need some 'encouragement' with a bash of the 'Tool, Fine Adjusting' (sledgehammer).

The Tactical Exercise without Troops (Tewt) regularly became a Penis (Practical Exercise not Involving Soldiers) on our Troop Leaders Course at Warminster too!

GUCCI - Anything that is good. Gucci watch, Gucci piece of electronic gear etc etc.

WAFI - Wind Assisted fking Idiot - a sailing boat as spotted from the bridge of a warship.

FBT - fking Big Tanker - Classification for a Very Large Crude Carrying vessel.

Two of my favourites from my extensive RAF Police career (three years):

"Cabbagey" - Anyone who took the whole "being in the Forces" thing a bit too seriously, by buying extra kit or wearing as much DPM as possible was said to be "a cabbage". Anyone taking cabbageness to its extreme was said to be "going the full Rambo".

"Gash" - Could either mean "spare", as in "Got a gash bit of paper?" or "rubbish" as in "This Storno is gash".

Julie Andrews - white with no sugar "white nun"
Whoopie Goldbergy - black with no sugar "black nun"
Kylie (NATO standard minus one)

An ex-Hercules driver came up with these a while back.

"Pang" - the nickname given to some poor girl on the C130 fleet - the explanation being that was the noise the shovel must have made when it hit her in the face.

"Wedge" - nickname given to another C130 mate, on the grounds he was the simplest tool known to mankind.

"Gadget wk" - the time-consuming process of setting up all the bits of kit in a Harrier cockpit.

WAFU = Naval Aviator.

Navy question. Busy bar, how do you tell who is the Naval Aviator?

Answer: You don't need to, give 'em five seconds and they'll tell you.

alfa pint, we always said that a brew with milk and one was Mary Poppins (white, just a spoonful etc).

i always liked the way the military mind worked for nicknames! There are the obvious "Dinger" Bell or "windy" gales etc, I got called (and still do by many) Crash as my initials are RTA.

the best was a guy in another cavalry regiment who picked up the rather unfortunate epithet of "Jigsaw" as people used to say he fell to pieces under pressure. tough to shake that one and of course it only stuck harder the more he protested!
