I've only ever done this in a spa - jumped from warm water in to ice-cold (with floating ice chunks) water.

It's exhilarating - if you can cope! hehe

When you jump into freezing water the body dumps a huge cocktail of endorphins, adrenalin and all manner of other chemicals into your system making you feel fantastic. That is probably why people do it.

Despite all the warnings about walking on ice / frozen ponds / lakes, there are three potential Darwin Award nominees in the background of the photo???

Yep, especially when the reporter who was there for the BBC said the ice was only an inch and a half thick, muppets.

yikes

Bloody hell, 1.5 inches thick and walking along it with kids, are they bloody mad? I thought it was supposed to be 4-5 inches thick to be deemed "safe" ?

Some half brain fool walked onto the river tees in stockton to rescue his dog, the river is so big that it freezing was a shock but it was thin ice. The dog survived its owner died. Human life is fragile, replacement dogs can be bought easily.

I used to walk over frozen lakes/rivers in my youth. Sometimes thin ice would crunch under my weight. I was a fool of the highest order. banghead

Not tried "bathing" in the freezing water, don't think i could face that.
Although, perhaps i came closer to it, than i actually think.

I went through the ice in our local village pond one year, luckily the water was shallow, and the bed hard enough to push up with my legs and punch through.

this may not have happened.
