Someone bought an item off Ebay from me for 99p.

An hour later he emailed to say he'd bought it by 'mistake' and asked for a refund. For 99p. I replied saying sales were final as I don't accept he bought it 'by mistake' (how? He has to go through at least four confirmatin screens before the puchase is finalised). He replied:

Peasant said:
i contacted you last night straight after i purchased the item so you could not have sent the item.
Also I get 7 days BUY IT NOW buyer protection
I dont want to open a paypal dispute nor do i want to leave bad feedback
Also if you give me a refund ebay and paypal give you your fees back, I should know i have refunded many people before
I think this is a fitting reply:

"I will refund you your NINETY NINE PENCE, obviously you need this NINENTY NINE PENCE so much it's not worth getting into a dispute over. I fail to see how you could have bought this item 'by mistake' as you have to click 'BUY', followed by a confirmation screen COMMITTING you to the sale, which you then have to agree to. You then have to go through the Paypal screens before the purchase is finalised so I'm amazed you could make a 'mistake' so many times considering you have over 400 feedback so obviously know how Ebay works. At the end of the day, it's NINETY NINE PENCE, you're obviously so hard up you value NINETY NINE PENCE more than you actually value the time you've spent emailing to moan about it. Enjoy your refund"

Seriously, would you bother? For 99p? I was only being awkward because it amused me someone would actually threaten to raise a dispute over 99p!

I wouldn't moan over 99p, ffs. What is the world coming to?

You either choose to bid or not, it's hardly complicated.

Seems like a fitting reply, but don't wind "buyer" up too much - could easily neg you, affecting your sales/ebay performance etc.

This is why I try not to sell on eBay these days.

Firstly the fees are rediculous, secondly I have had the misfortune to have dealt with some real fktards, one of which appears to have become my own personal Internet stalker...

I would not mind if they were a gift bearing stalker, but they just keep trying to get the last word in, on a dispute that was won in their favour that we resolved very quickly.

What is even more bizarre is I have not replied to any of his emails since the dispute, they just seem to want a fight about something...

Woo hoo.

I'm amazed that you can be arsed to list something of this value in the first place.

Can you really be bothered to photograph, list, deal with enquiries and post said item for 99p less costs?

On a similar subject: eBay now don't allow you to have delivery on "Accessories". So you need to factor it into the start price. eBay offer free listing for a start price under 99p.

I know its to stop people charging most of the money in delivery (as they don't get fees from delivery), but my god. I'd got a few things to sell, probably only get maybe a quid or 2, but useful to someone. So i've either got to pay a listing to find out no one wants it anyway (overpriced!) or offer free delivery and it might go for 99p which wouldn't cover postage.

It's a guide for something, I originally listed it because me and a friend had a discussion about how people were daft enough to buy anything. So far I've sold 80 of the guides.

And then moan about someone asking for a refund over a 99p item! If it's only 99p, refund them?! Peasant sellers!

belittle them for being a prat by all means, but leave the abuse about their poverty out of it.

It makes you look a bit of a dwad and surrenders your moral high ground unnecessarily.

If it was only 99p then why did you make a fuss, why didn't you just refund it straight away?.

Depends how many of those 99p items you can sell, for example yesterday somebody bought 80 £1 items from our ebay shop. Over the last 120 days we've done about £20k in sales, most of our stuff sells for about a pound.

ETA: To the OP, the guys well within his rights to ask for a refund, your attitude as a seller doesn't help the rest of us! Like you said it's only 99p FFS not worth the guy deciding to buy a tenners worth of you and leave negative feed back on each one.

Because you can't 'buy something by mistake' so I figured I may as well get some amusement out of it rather than have my time totally wasted.

do you get many whining for refunds? Even if I'd bought it 'by mistake' (which is impossible really) I'd just think "ah fk it"

You click 'Buy', the second screen you're faced with is "By clicking on the button below, you commit to buy this item from the seller." You then have to press 'Commit to Buy'. At what point through this process do you continue to make a 'mistake'?

Yes, and in situations like this we'd refund them straight away. Not worth the hassle if they decided to put it to despute. There's a reason we have Top Rate Seller status.

True, I'm not denying that they aren't irrotating idiots, but from a business point of view it makes more sense to just refund them. If they've been particularly difficult we'll also ban them from buying from us again.

It's clear he's found the info in the 'guide' by simply googling. Are you one of those type of sellers?

I was asked for a refund of 99p from a buyer who bought a CD from me. His reason? Because it was not in "perfect" condition. Yet, I never described it as such, I said it was in "excellent" condition. He complained that it had a tiny mark on it, but admitted that it played fine. However, he also argued that because it was described as "excellent", it should not have had a mark on it at all.

Absolute wker.
