An offshoot of the Big Cat thread - the Beast of Gevaudan

Having first come across this story in a book about 8-9 years ago, it still fascinates me, yet hardly anyone has really heard of it. For those that don't know what I'm on about:

Now, it's easy to dismiss them as folklore, until you realise that the French king, Louise XV, sent his own son and marksmen to kill it. They did, in the end, and the body was stuffed and on display (obviously no pictures). I believe the body was destroyed when the museum it was in burned down.
What do you think it was? Grotesquely over sized wolf? Large dog? Some form of big cat? bear?
