I'm interested in your opinions on this, is it me, computer users or male/females speaking a different language?

I've been accused of not making myself clear by two women at work.

I changed a password from abc#1234 to abc##1234.

I let them find out their passwords did not work (I wanted to see how soon they found out).

So when I was asked they could not log-in, I replied, "try two hashes".

Three days later, they say they've still not been able to log into this thing. I was in their office so asked these two middle aged ladies to show me. When I witnessed them typing "##" for the password.

I thought this was funny, but they seemed very annoyed at what I'd told them was not correct.

Is it me? Or if you'd be using a password with a "#" in it, and told to try two #, would you not amend the existing password from one # to two #.

I still think it's funny, but still think I right, which makes them even more annoyed.

You should have been more clear and told them their entire passwords again.

I'd be a little surprised you knew my password... shouldn't it be a one way hash?!

Yes, I do need to get out more.

Best one is "Its Blank"

Our helpdesk had to reset a customer's password. Told them they now had to set it to one of their choice and it had to be unique. Cue them asking how to spell 'unique'.rolleyes

If you worked for me then you'd be posting that your boss has no sense of humour and has just given you a bking.

Yes it is - as I'm reminded every time I dial in to a tele-conference and am asked to "enter the conference number followed by pound"

Your instructions were not clear. I would have put in ## as well. The instuctions should have been your old but with 2#'s in place of the 1 you used to have. If they had still messed up then you would have a point.

You have to be 200% clear to any non-IT IT users.

It depends on how you said it. If you emphasised "2", in such a way as to suggest "2 instead of 1", then I think you are right to be surprised that they didn't try the whole password but with 2 hashes instead of one.

If on the other hand you just said "try 2 hashes" with no special emphasis then I think you should be taken out and given a good going over.
