Just having a quick look on Rightmove and found a house that looks quite nice but have no idea what the area is like? Can anyone shed any light on it?

Thanks smile

Not too bad, not exactly Mayfair. It should be a fine area to live in.

That's my stomping ground. It's not too bad, quite a lot of students (just round the corner from the Uni Halls of residence).

Depends if you need to live there for a reason, or you just randomly selected it on the map as a place to move to.

It's neither in the city centre or on the edge of town.

Depending whereabouts in Bitterne Park, you might find yourself directly beneath the final descent path into Southampton Airport.

And because that part of Bitterne Park is one of the highest areas in Southampton, the planes don't clear the houses by a massive amount - the planes are mostly turboprops rather than jets, but they can still be a bit noisy.

Put this on the south coast forum, you may get a lot more feedback.

Good point - family have a house here and it's directly under the final approach and the house shakes !

Used to live on Bullar Road. Twas OK from what I remember and a lot nicer than some parts of Soton that I lived in.

For a while, our nightly entertainment was provided when they changed the priorities on the junction at the bottom...kept the scrappy down by the bridge in good business anyway...

Just avoid areas like St Marys, Newtown, The Polygon (aka the student ghetto) and don't rent anywhere owned by Harry Singh (local property tycoon with a reputation for being an arse when things go tits up, at least while I was living there).

Maybush was ok whilst I was there, pretty quiet and about 5 miles out of the city. We moved into the old town area (Oxford Street, John Street) which is probably still my favourite place to be. Have you checked out the marina properties..?

It's alright, as suburbs go. We almost got a place there last year, but it fell through. Glad we didn't in the end as it was miles from any shops or pubs.

I quite liked the idea of being under the flightpath. I miss living near Heathrow!

At the risk of offending the good citizens of Shirley Warren or Coxford I'd add these to the list of places I'd avoid!

I'm over in Shirley (Atleast I think its Shirley, Just off Hill Lane?) It doesnt seem that bad around here. Quiet street and no trouble that we've seen. Been here since August now...

Southampton is a pretty decent place though in my opinion.

My mate lives nearby, in the summer we have our very own Bora Bora moments from Ibiza, when the planes fly over...they do fly that low!

Also near to Townhill Park area which is a bit ghetto.

Don't confuse Shirley with Shirley Warren - two VERY different places! wink

..and watch out for estate agents who try to convince you that the property you are looking at is in Freemantle. It's still Shirley.
