I took some stuff down to the local tip yesterday (just general rubbish), and wondered over to the pile of computers and other electronic bits and pieces they'd separated from the general rubbish.
I spotted one of those 70's 'flip' clock radios in amongst the bits and pieces (they have a digital display, but the digits are actually little cards which flip over). I thought 'hmmm, cool' and picked it up to take a closer look.
I asked the bloke if I could have it, he said NO, ripped the power cord out of the back of the clock and chucked it in the electronics 'recycling' skip.

Honestly - what a shame. I know it was only a clock, but they're a piece of nostalgia and I know they fetch a fair price on eBay...;)

I guess they're worried about getting sued if you plug stuff in and it electrocutes you!
Can't we at least sign a disclaimer for people who would genuinely like to 'recycle' electronic stuff? They had a pile of old sofas which they're willing to sell ffs!

Miserable bd.
ther is always one young fella at my local tip who is always helpgul, etc.
The rest are old miserable slags.
When I dumped my old rear Projection TV, they were all waiting to see where it would go, so I took it straight to the helpful fella.
I know they probably share all the stuff out, but made me feel better!

thats so petty.
most of the major household waste sites local to me now have recycling sheds set up (like a permanent car boot stand) where things people might want to recycle go & you pay carboot level prices (pence)

+2 Don't bother asking. They are probably trained programmed to say No!

Large waste companys weigh all of the products recycled and will provide the local authority the figures to show the recycling rate of the contract.

The recycled product will then be sold and the income will go to the waste company or be split with the local authority.

It would not have any material difference to the waste company or local authority had he given you the item however he would have been disciplined if caught.

He'd have been put in a difficult situation had he given you the item and 10 other members of the public also pointed out something that they wish to take foc.

Some HWRC’s do allow you to make an offer for goods that you wish to purchase. This income goes to the waste company or gets split with the local authority.

Everything you plug in would have to be PAT tested before being given away or sold.
Just take it.

But it's what they've been trained to do.

I remember a few years ago hiring a van to take an unwanted sofa to the tip with the then girlfriend. We pulled in through the gates and were immediately stopped by the Tip Gestapo.

"You can't come in 'ere in a van, that's commercial waste."

"No, you don't understand, we've just hired the van to carry our old sofa here. It's not commercial waste."

"No, no vans. That's commercial."

"Honestly, it's not, it's just an old sofa."

"No, no vans."

So, I reversed out of the gate, parked up and the GF and I had to carry the sofa into the site.

"Where shall we put this?"

"In that skip over there mate."

"Thank you."

"No problem Sir."

fking jobsworths.

Yes, that's good example about the vans. They simply will not allow one to enter the said premises.

Ours do, but only by appointment - you give your name and get a ref. #. Seems fair enough...

Can't believe so many people are calling the staff jobsworths (correctly) and advocating taking the clock without asking.

I think we all know where this would end...

Last time we needed to be rid of a sofa, we paid the council (IIRC) £25 and they came and took it away for us. Has to be cheaper than hiring a van!

Also slightly surprised that an over-eager mod hasn't moved this thread to 'Homes, gardens & DIY' !!

We were moving house at the time and had the van handy, so thought we'd just "pop" the sofa down the local tip...
