Sometimes things like that are better off unsaid and kept to yourselves. For the amount of gatherings you would attend with these "chavs" was it worth starting a family row over and hurting your wife's sisters feelings?

I'd say you no longer have a problem with the friends they keep as it is unlikely that you'll be seeing them any time soon wink

I have a similar situation with the OH.

I keep schtum and get on with it, get drunk with them and say things I'd never get away with ordinarily. A nice break.

Every family has it's problems, you sometimes just have to leave it be. It's not like you have to see these people every week and you might be surprised by these people if you got to know them a bit better, you've only met them once, at least give it another go for the sake of your wife and her sister.

Had a friend in a similar position - association with scum through relationship. He ended up with a smashed cheekbone through 'mistaken identity' by one of the 'group' who got away with it.

You shouldn't have raised it, but just been 'busy' when it was a group social with less amenable elements.

So you're effectively saying that you're better than them, and you thought it necessary to tell them?

Their friends probably think you're a stuck up tt, but they're too polite to say so.

Now who has the most class?

I guess it depends if you believe in a class system

I don't - and I have met some very wealthy, very successful people who act in my opinion like disgusting scum, who would consider themselves middle or upper class or whatever the bks term is now, and some people that look chavvish, take a few drugs in their own time but are very polite and respectful of theirs and others property. I suppose they would be lower class because of what they wear and who they are.

Class arguments are an excuse to make people feel more important than they actually are...

How people act towards others is far more important.

Have to say, there's something quite unpleasant having dinner with people who can't use a knife and fork properly .. or chopsticks if it's one of those eat-as-much-as-you-like places. As for respectful behaviour, not bringing brats along who run around whilst you're eating would be a good start. I'd say avoid them or just put up with it and pretend you're watching one of those wildlife programmes on BBC2, or Louis Theroux Investigates.

They already identified you as being 'different' from them - and you did the same, then you basically said "I don't like your sort". What do you expect them to do?

"Now you come to mention it, our social class is pretty bad, we do apologise for offending your middle class sensibilities".

i have found when dealing with vast swathes of the general population that most people have some redeeming feature. Having a diplomatic outlook you can fit in anywhere and with anyone, regardless of their social standing. I can't stand certain people but when I meet them in public, I am courteous and polite. Life is too short to be worried how other people live their lives, leave that to the god botherers and harridans.

Yes. I'm sure the crackhead chavs will be better off without him.

Nothing wrong with having standards, I wouldn't freely associate with crackhead chavs either.

Well. You have already solved your problem.

Forget you ever said anything. When invited to family parties you don't want to go to? In future just say no. A handy excuse is that you have already agreed to be somewhere else.

Life is too short to spend time being polite to people you'd cross the road to avoid ordinarily but there's no need to rub other people's noses in it, either.

A mate has found himself a lovely new bird who clearly considers herself upper class. The first question she asked me was what car I drove. I decided to lie and tell her it was an old banged up Corolla.

She didn't ask me a second question hehe

Feck me mate that was dumb, I come from a very split background. My own life tends to revolve around a lot of wealth but I also still attend "low class" events. I tend to find the people at these events are far less up their own arses. Never judge a person on the size of their wallet, it just makes you look like a prat.
