OK, Dad bought a GPS from the US, and paid £80 import tax/VAT based on it being worth about £350. When we opened the box it was broken. Is there away to get some of the tax back? It's obviously not worth £350, so we've overpaid the tax. Can we get it back from the gubbinmint??
The duty is paid on the declared value not what its worth. As it was broken then you should get a refund from the shipper for the value of goods and then go about claiming back the duty. You'll need to contact HMRC for the exact process
