Over the last two nights I have been rudely awoken 5 times by cats meowing / whining incredibly loudly.

Last night it was the same two cats that kept facing off to each other in my garden, I dont know if they were trying to oust each other for territory or trying to chat each other up for a bit of midnight naughtiness but the noise is horrible, a really ear piercing shriek.

Anyway, its bloody annoying and interupting my beauty sleep.

What are they up to?

Cats tend to vocalise threats more than actually fight. The noise can be horrific and wake you up with a hell of a shock!!

Couple of reasons for it:
New cat in area casuing upset as it tries to sort its boundaries out with resident cats
A female in season nearby causing males to confront each other, though this would suggest you have some entire males in the area (they will travel some distance to seek out a female) they will also intrude on nutered male and females ground and cause trouble!
Young cat maturing and getting braver so trying to assert itself into its surroundings

It is annoying, may be worth asking neighbours if they have new cats etc so may be worth keeping them in at nights. Hopefully things will naturally settle down.
I have experienced this but it was my own cat trying to defend his garden against a huge farm cat (my cat is tiny) it is a hell of a wake up call!!

The wierd thing is that they keep coming back to our garden, they just stand there looking at each other about a foot apart, shrieking at each other.

Gave them a hell of a fright when I opened the window to see what was going on, never seen anything move so fast.

Im going to get one of those ultrasonic alarms this avo to see if it keeps them away.

Many of my neighbours have cats and they seem to use the garden as a fighting ring, the screeches are horific, well at least they were until someone threw a bucket of water at them to "cool them off", they now slink around the edges of the garden.

Not weird at all - sounds like your garden is disputed territory.

One of the neighbours has a cat which comes into our garden and yowls at our cat - both males. If I go to break it up, as soon as intruder cat turns tail to leave, my cat chases him and tries to tear him a new one.
