My local vet is looking to charge over £500 to remove a small wart/growth from my GSD eyelid. She is insured but is that the going rate?, just seems a bit excessive, wondering if they jack it up for the Insurance?

From memory I paid less than half that to have a growth removed from my Labrador's eye lid approx 3 years ago.

Ask for a breakdown. It is fraud if they hike the prices just for an insured pet.

Check list. For that price your dog should get at least the following:
Pre anaesthetic bloods
Intravenous fluids
The operation (inc cost of intravenous anaesthetics etc)
medication e.g. pain relief and antibiotics
Inclusive post op appointments
The lump sent away for analysis
Lampshade collar to prevent rubbing of eye post op

Hope that helps

Large dogs obviously use more drugs so will cost more.
Lumps on eyelids can be tricky to remove re: aesthetics and comfort after, and they are prone to bleeding so not a quick job (usually have to cut into lid to remove all of growth.

What area of the country do you live? This will cuase variation in prices.

I would say however it is borderline high and I would definitely not expect it too cost more than £500 pref nearer £400 but that is making a comment on something I haven't seen.

Thanks for the replies, I,m in Cambs. Planning to go to another Vet for a second opinion. My usual local one has been taken over by a 'chain' company it seems.

Seems a bit severe, we would be charging approx £200 assuming it's not a massive dog and op was straight forward, would include pre op blood screen and post op checks, but histology of the lump would be additional. Mind you, your travel and hotel would also be extra if you want to come here. Maybe I should show such prices to my clients who always moan that we are too expensive idea

Remember cheap isn't always cheerful.

I've heard plenty of stories of owners who base their treatment of cost then regret it afterwards.

The cost isnt the issue, to be honest I,d pay a bloody fortune as long as shes fit and well. This is a new vet thats taken over my previous ones practice and is fairly well unknown around here. The same firm has also taken over a neighboring town practice too.

Sadly chain vets are becoming all too common and not always for the best. I am glad I work for an independant and (imo) an extremely well run high standard vet practice.
