I am not talking about Woolworths or major stores but the small odd independent ones that were about but no longer exist.

For me, an electronics shop in London Road South, Lowestoft - It used to have loads of electronic junk and in those days (early 80's) there was lots of old computer and other parts from Marconi etc.

Another, in Southwold 'Rutlands' I think it was called - THE local model toy shop and as a child I would purchase bags of plastic soldiers and odd Airfix kits.

Cannings in New Malden, Surrey - sold books and toys before the computers and gadgets took over, and the town and it's bigger chavette sister Kingston became a magnet for underclass shoppers.

'The Gourmet' which was , funnily enough, a gourmet food shop in Lewes. All sorts of weird and wonderful things in there, but mainly it was the smell that enticed you in most.

Pride & Clarke of Stockwell Road. I loved making the trip across London to have a wander around their shops of a weekend. See what was new and purchase a few spares, etc.

Beatties were tops - used to love the one in Blackpool, used to save up for new chassis/tyres'n'stuff for my old TCR kit, head on in there for some new wheels and marvel at the performance improvements.

Another one I definitely miss - the old music Megastores, like the Virgin/Our Price/HMV megastores that they used to have in manchester.

Didn't Clements become John Lewis or was that the dept. store at the other end of Watford opposite Waring & Gillow?

No, Clements is now some other no-chain department store. Can't remember the name.

ETA: Google reveals that Clements is still there, selling furniture in the basement of what is now TJ Hughes.
