I have been offered by my employer to work abroad for three months in order to exchange experience in the global development departments. The choice is between Shanghai, China and Boston, USA. I know where I will go, but how would PH decide? smile

Came back from Shanghai last month, and from what I saw of it (went with work) it is a fantastic place. Great people, lovely food, and it's a huuuuuge place! 17 million people! Thoroughly recommend it!!

In the case of the US, the three months bit wouldn't be a ploy to get around the need for a visa, would it? You are asking for trouble if it is.

Voted and can't believe the results... why would anyone choose China over the USA?

It's virtually impossible to get visas to enable you to work in the USA and your employer is handing you the offer on a plate... the only thing that would concern me is that I wouldn't want to leave at the end of 3 months.

China... no thanks, wouldn't want to go there for a holiday, never mind to live.

Lived in Shanghai for the better part of a year for work.

It's a depraved party city. You will not believe the stuff that goes on after hours.

And it has loads of other good points too! Cheap, people are friendly, getting around it is very easy, it's relatively safe (even in the worst back streets) and it's a great base from which to explore the rest of Asia.

I do enjoy being in the States but China would be an experience. Go for China and get out of my (your) comfort zone.

I've not been to Shanghai but know a couple of people from there and a few who have been, they say it is a very nice city and in a much more European style than most other big cities in China, so I say go for Shanghai.

Been to Boston many times and although it's very nice it's ever so dull. Shanghai on the other side has all the vibrancy of a dynamic modern city, to the extent my missus came back from her last trip saying she could live there! Do Shanghai and you'll remember for ever. Do Boston and you'll struggle to recall it on the plane home.

Go for Shanghai - crazy place, good standard of living and a great base to see lots of other parts of Asia. Boston is a little bit twee and quiet in comparison....

Shanghai all the way for me. Vibrant, expanding, great night life, not too expensive and a great base from which to explore the rest of China and Asia.

Septics - why would you want to go there?
