... Got a whole bloody army of them in the garden at the moment, not seen them before.

Slightly bigger than a blackbird, narror red stripe running front to back across the head.

Any ideas what they might be?

Cheers

Green Woodpeckers are solitary aren't they? Certainly - I've never seen an "army" of them. You sure?

yes they are, certainly never seen a flock of them.

Mother and young? wouldn't have thought so this time of year, but they may have been late fledglings.

OP how many do you class as an army?

I am sure it is what I saw.

(Army being a slight exageration on my part, but around 20. I'll look again at the site, but I didn't see anything else remotely close. Red stripe , bright red stripe (cap?) over the head running front to back.

What colour was the body? Green Woodpeckers are very green and they don't tend to hang around in flocks. You may have just been lucky though.

Green Woodpecker.

That's definately it.

Beautiful looking bird , reminded me of the Saab greeny/grey colour 'scarab green' I think.

Never seen one before let along a whole group of them.

Parakeets would be more likely if there are a number of them.

Fieldfares and Redwings are around in big numbers at the moment.

You'll never see a flock of Woodpeckers.
