Are My Glasses Rose Tinted...?
Discussion
Inspired from the Laminated Pint Glasses thread, it got me thinking...
In all my years of pub drinking, which I will be the first to admit are extensive, I have just about seen it all, yet never, ever has it entered my mind that deliberately hitting another with a glass object could be an even remotely good idea no matter the amount of provocation or beer involved.
I guess it must be a direct result of a common sense upbringing and education. Nothing priveleged, just a basic understanding in how to behave and get on in life.
We see in the press on a daily basis the various crimes the population commit, from murder all the way through to dropping litter, yet its never occured to me to do any such thing.
Why is it then that our considerable tax resources are not pumped into promoting the family unit and education? Rather than forever chasing after the horse why not fix the stable door?
Instead of laminating beer glasses, why aren't we ensuring that families are given all the support they can to bring their children up with a basic level of common sense which will tell them throwing glasses, as is running with scissors, ain't a good idea?
You might argue that it could be really boring if we were all the same, but I can't get away from the fact that if everyone had the same start, their approach to life and people would also be similar to mine. We'd all be reasonably happy and there wouldn't be any crime.
Am I missing something here?

I did witness a fair amount of pub fights in my teens. Not once did i see a knife being pulled out, or a glass being pushed into someones face.
Usually they amounted to a few puches and a bit of grappling. One person would end up with a bruised ego and everyone would be best mates again within a week
I even remember showing up for a huge ruck between one council estate gang and another. it ended up as a very honourable punch up between the two hardest lads while everyone else kept an eye on the other gang. One guy in the other gang did produce a chair leg or something at one point but his mates all told him to drop it and not be such an idiot

Governments never have a long term view, even though they always say they do.
Main reason is the voting public want quick fixes and there manifesto is only any good until the next election.
How many votes will a party get if they said "Things will be no better or worse with us but within 15 years we will be back to good old values, respect and family units"?
Sheep follow, sheep gave no vision.

Flip me, I'd vote for 'em! Look at the long term gains.Edited by pacman1 on Sunday 7th February 13:06
I'd give them my vote. (I've never voted by the way, ever)

Personally I'd just like to see a fix that works, however long it might take. Anything else is a waste of time and resources.GTiR said:

In today's world it suits politicians to treat an ever expanding population as sheep because it's easy, when in fact they should be providing the vision. Edited by pacman1 on Sunday 7th February 13:30

I can remember a similar experience from my Yoof , guess it would not be the same today
the cost of rasing the std of living of all poor familes to the points where they no longer were drawn to crime/drugs would be too large - so there will always be people not suitable to raise kids. the only way to do it would be to start afresh and set strict rules over when you are able to breed. never gonna happen.
Agree with OP posters thoughts completely.
I, in my day, did sometimes get home rather worse for wear! Never did I ever get into a brawl, slanging match etc and I think that was because even in my worsened state I wasn't raised to behave in such a way. Even my slightly more volatile sister avoided conflict (expect raised voices with boyfriends
) but never fighting etc.
I have witnessed a couple of minor brawls (and a few post brawl casualties) but the worst one was seeing a guy holding a knife behind his back, the police were onto him though.

It doesn't necessarily follow that the standard of living has to be raised to achieve this, although I believe it could follow as a consequence. It's a question of raising the level of the lowest common denominator in my view. And a solution would take a couple of generations to fix anyway, thereby spreading the cost. But at least we'd get a result.I'm advocating straightforward, common sense education. Not Labour social engineering or Hitler style eugenics.

I've never seen anyone try and glass someone with a pint glass.
I have seen people finish their drink and throw it over their shoulder though.

I can help bu think that crime, cruelty to animals, even poverty globally could all be addressed if the grass roots were a more rounded, socially concious, respectful place to learn and grow up.
Rounded? Socially conscious? Respectful?Sounds just like the average PH member.
Oh wait...
There is, unfortunately, an underclass in this country who don't give a s**t for anyone else, there always has been and there always wil be. When I was a teenager in Croydon in the mid 1970s only a fool would walk though the Whitgift shoppong centre in the evening for fear of not coming out the other side. Only 18 months ago my 21 yr old son was in Bristol (next to Bridwell police station believe it or not) when a group of morons walking the other way said "who are the F*** are you looking at?" He know he and his mates were in for a beating and I suppose he was luck only to have busted nose. 35 years on, nothing's changed. It's why our city centres are populated at night by the young, drunk or those out for trouble, decent people stay at home

You can be young and decent so still go out in the town and not get into trouble. Your sons run in is a classic around Bristol. It seems commonplace that fights start completely unprovoked in the way his did.pacman1 said:

And lifes like a casino...there have to be loosers. there is simply not enough money/jobs to sustain any modern society where you allow a small few to have a massive advantge over the others.

Perhaps, but surely it would be more effective to tackle why someone thinks it's a good idea to throw a glass at someone than to re engineer the glass? At the moment we waste vast amounts of money and resources on the symptoms rather than tackling the cause. You can 'support' the families that spawn the sort of people you're talking about for all you want but all it'll do is raise the turnover in beer and plasma tvs. 'Family values' my a**e... a considerable proportion of families is so dysfunctional in basic things like offering children a 'safe haven' both physically and emotionally, education, sometimes even making sure the kids are clothed and fed properly - and unfortunately, child protection agencies seem to be more worried about the girl who has all this and wants to go sailing the world than the bottomfeeders with massive issues themselves, who beat/starve/abuse their young children to death.

Totally agree with the op.
On a similar vein it annoys me when I hear of plans to increase the price of alcohol to stop under age drinkers being able to afford it and get plastered on the streets and cause trouble.
Why the hell should I pay more for a drink because some little s
ts have not been brought up properly?
I don't know if anyone caught the reports a few weeks ago where the police and certain other people were highlighting the fact that Buckfast seemed to be the apparent "cause" of the problem in certain areas as it was cheap, its hardly the drinks fault is it?
Why punish everyone by increasing prices of this or banning that due to a few trouble makers?
Because its easier than actually fixing the problem.
