A gentleman /lady should always wear the proper hat. As PHers we clearly are never seen in public without appropriate headgear. So show us yours! My current collection:

Leather bush hat. Current daily wearer. Slight downside it is a bit heavy. Used as a head covering, also to carry water and make fire; a hat of many talents.

Pith helmet. Hugely practical in sun or rain, cool, strong. Working up the courage to wear it in public. Wife doesn't like it although I think it makes me look rather dashing.

The Panama. A bit of a cliche, but light and practical in the sun. Not so good in the rain as they go all soggy. Got a few of those of various weights.

Felt fedora. Also crap in the rain as they shrink and get out of shape. On my third and last one. Replaced by the bushhat.

I would like a Tilly hat but am loathe to pay the huge money that they command.

What do you wear?

As you can see, not a great hat wearer! All practical applications for me really because they make my head itch!
The cap with the neck flap gets worn on holidays or when out running in the summer, and has poppers so I can
roll the flap up when not needed.
The blue one gets worn at work if I'm in a food hygene area, or when it's raining because I wear glasses.
Always have the hard hat handy for agency work if I visit any building sites, etc, otherwise they won't let you in.

Now I don't actually own the fez yet, but I almost bought one last year, just because I always wanted one.
It was on sale on a bric a brac stand at a classic military vehicle show, wish I'd bought it now, but didn't.
So I shall be back to claim it this year if it's still there!

I'm liking the idea of the leather bush hat. I had one many years ago but it got into some mischief on a particularly rowdy hockey tour and was never the same again.

Old man Pints was wearing his fedora yesterday but even on a 65YO dutchman, it didn't look right.

There are 3 trilbies hiding in a box somewhere in the attic. And that's where they shall stay.

Several caps available for the beating summer sun. And a fisherman style hat... sans hooks.

ETA: Also own a cycle helmet and several beanies (the bonce must be kept warm in mid-winter.

I treat mine with spray-on waterproofing, and I'm still on my first, propably ten years old now.

Can I ask the OP where he lives, and also which century ?

Brave choice, but perhaps a bit OTT for me to don in the Ford Focus whilst popping out for some nappies. However should I go searching for the Mystic Runes of Ishrah, I know what I'll be wearing !

Surely these have relegated hats into obsolescence?.

I've got an Australian bush hat. It's great. Fantastic for wearing when fishing! This one:

After a certain age, you have to consider other options. Besides, wearing a hood into a building will either brand you a criminal or at best a wker.

How the OP sees himself in those hats:

How everyone else sees him in any of them:

American Trilby's.
Slightly larger brim than a traditional english one.
But not verging on anything that makes you want to say Yippie Kiy Aye.

I've noticed a distressing trend of gentlemen going out hatless. Has anyone else noticed this?

I would love to wear proper hats on a more regular basis. Last year I was at the Monterey Jazz Festival and bought myself a brilliant little hat. Kind of Trilby-esque, but more of a Panama material. Black bloke from New Orleans who sold it to me just said "that's a jazz hat son, now you go get your thing on". So, naturally, I had to have it.
Not plucked up the courage to wear it back home yet, or indeed anything other than a baseball cap or a beanie.

Where the hell does one wear a pith helmet?

Having been raised in the 21st century my headgear collection is rather limited/less extreme than the OP's.

2x Helmets: One for snowboarding and one for cyclebiking.

Multiple Beanies: For cold/slouching days.

1 x Panama: I actually wear this quite often in the summer. Notably for Goodward....apparently some dude started wearing one a few years back and it seems to be all the rage now :P

1 x Trilby: Purchased for gangster fancy dress and not worn since.

I bought one of these when I was about 19 but never wore it. I put it on at home and realised I looked like a complete tool.

I have a genuine Russian submariners hat - purchased from a chap selling them and various other bits of army surplus (including Ak-47s) in Lithuania in the late 90s. I suspect had I had sufficient dollars he could have probably acquired me the submarine as well hehe

Sadly I look a tool in it so have never worn it, and my OH won't entertain the idea of it being my sex hat.

Same here - I have a pork pie/trilby type hat that didn't get delivered in time for the gangster fancy dress. Never worn.
