Apart from someone trying to signal Batman, what on earth is that very very bright beam of light pointing towards the sky?

As it was dark, I couldn't see where it was coming from, only caught a glimpse of a nearby location (White horse industrial park or something), though Google brings up this as being bear Bath.

Unless it was aliens

Where exactly on the A420, was it near Watchfield?

Could be coming from the Defence Academy.

I honestly don't remember.

Can't be many of them?

Google is useless, it was 100% 'white horse' something, it was a type of trading estate

There are quite a lot of "White Horse" places along the A420 and they tend to be clustered around the A420 at Watchfield/Shrivenham. For example there is a White Horse Brewery there.

My money is on it being something from the D.A complex.

It was on the left (heading northbound), looked quite close to the road but was surrounded by trees.

The light source was actually emitted above the tree line, so must be on some sort of tower

When you say the left, you mean your left when heading to Oxford from Swindon, or coming in the other direction.

It is on some sort of tower. I've seen it before - it's on the hill behind those weird wooden statues.

Not sure what it is, so not much help.

Could have been a music festival/nightclub thing going on, they quite often have those lights to direct people in.

Although they aren't meant to be shining at the moment, according to this...

I only knew what it was because it kinda freaked me out when I was driving that route back over Christmas! Late at night, no other cars on the road for some reason and this beacon which seemed to follow me...

The Folly lights have been on for what seems like weeks now, and you can see it for miles. It's a little spooky around the suburbs of Faringdon when there's low lying cloud and you see the light moving around! You can go up the tower the first Sunday of every month I believe.
