Hi

Unfortunately due to an impending relocation caused by a change in job i need to sell my recently acquired Alaskan Malamute, pictured below:

He is now 12 weeks old and fully vacinated, and i will accept any sensible offers for him as long as he goes to a suitable home.

Can anyone offer the best advice for rehoming him?

many thanks

Reasonable offer?!!?

I've seen many people on PH take in unwanted dogs, cats etc since I've been here. But I can't imagine people will want to pay for them.

If I bought a puppy then wanted rid, my first priority would be a loving home, I wouldn't want anything more then beer tokens, if that.

Yeh, a contract with a decent breeder should demand it.

Dog won't travel in a car to it's new home then?

Sorry to sound judgmental but this doesn't add up. You've had the dog 4 weeks max and (a) you didn't see this change coming, (b) you can't take it with you, (c) you haven't gone back to the breeder, (d) you're advertising it on a CAR forum, (e) have you tried breed rescue? Etc etc....

Are you sure it's not that the pup destroys everything in sight and p155es everywhere and you, ahem, bit off more than you could chew?

Got to be back to the breeder, who should then start the vetting process again to secure a home where the dog is actually wanted and will be cared for !!!

To answer some of the less intelligent feedback
a) i did not see this change coming as i wouldn't of purchased the dog in the first place. To be offered a dream job that doesn't involve working from home, and would mean locking him up for 8 hours a day if i wasnt travelling is not something i wish to do.
b) I can't take him with me as the position involves worldwide travel 90% of the time.
c) The breeder has been notified, but is reluctant to take him back at this time due to a family illness. I have been told to re-contact them in a couple of weeks.
d)The assumption that this is the only forum i have advertised it on is daft, especially as i remember reading sub-sections such as watches, music, sport, photography, etc on this site. I think you'll find it has expanded a little since the days of the old TVR forum.
e)There have been many posts regarding dogs in this section. Rather than offloading him to a breed rescue i'd rather hang on to him for as long as possible and rehouse him directly (if he's not returned to the breeder).
f) and finally...Having kept Rottweillers for many years, puppies do wee and that is something you accept when you get one (if you look closely at the photo the rug doesn't fit properly as a cheap one was put down whilst he was being trained). Most dogs only destroy and chew if there are bored and this comes from their owners locking them up for many hours a day whilst they go to work.

As others have said, in the first instance you should be speaking with the breeder, but not expecting reimbursing. 'If' the breeder will not take the malamute back (which is known in these times) then there are a number of specialist malamute rescue centres.

Offering such an animal for sale to the general public is unfortunately asking for trouble. For starters many may just see pound signs from breeding themselves, others may simply see a georgeous little puppy but not realise that in a few years they will be dealing with 6 stone of dog which malts twice a year (and in copious amounts), need to be kept in an area as secure as fort knox as they are amazing escape artists, and also that they are not the type of dogs which you can take for a gentle stroll around the part off the lead (they pull like crazy, well for a while at least, and don't come back it they see something more interesting).

YOu must have expected some pretty harsh replies, esp on PH. Personally I do agree, It is hard to believe that you had absolutely no idea that you would be facing a job change in the time before you had the pup and to now.

Is there no way you can work around it. Dog walkers/ sitters etc may be worth the effort to be able to keep the pup. When is the 'relocation' happening. Next week or in a month or 2? If not straight away you will have time for him to be trained and get used to time alone.

I do agree 8 hours a day is too long esp for a breed like a Malamute but there are ways around it, you just need to put in the effort. I just feel you have given up on this pup too quickly.
