So... I've won an item on ebay.. in Nottingham.. that weighs 200Kg and is about 3 foot by 3 foot by 3 foot.

I have a pickup (damn high load bed though...), and at my end of things, a telehandler to unload.

At the far end is someone's Dad, without any lifting gear.

So how does one relatively unfit bloke lift 200Kg by about four foot?

Hiring just about anything would make the 'canny ebay bargain' less of a bargain, so what's the solution?

Borrow someones engine crane?

As long as its on a flat surface the trolley wheels should be able to cope with moving it a short distance.

Just a thought.

Get some help (3-4 mates in your pick up), should be able to lift it then?

Or pick up some meatheads from your local gym perhaps?

I think the engine crane wouldn't lift high enough.. at least the one I have access to.

The problem is that it is in Nottingham, and I'm in Cambridge - so any helpful hands would have to be transported there. The pickup is not a crew cab! 200 kilos is at least six people to life that high with confidence.

That's the biggest problem - I don't want to spend two hours driving there without being pretty confident that I can load it into the truck.

Two strong planks to make a ramp and a block and tackle attached to the roll bar.

The key is to put it all in your groin and your back. Take your legs totally out of the equation. Lift with your lower back in a jerking, twisting motion.

Have 10 of these first as well to dull the pain - don't worry if you get a slight twinge when lifting.

Two planks, some rollers and a system of pulleys. (Sorry, you'll have to work the details out for yourself.)

Dig a big hole in the ground with a ramp into it. Drive the pickup into that then simply push the engine at bed height aboard.

Admit it, you're stealing a safe aren't you!

On a more helpful note, can you get your hands on a winch to fit to the bed of your pickup? With a winch (even a manual one) you should be able to get the object on board, either by sliding it up ramps or using an A frame.

I'd use my engine crane... if I could remember who I lent it to.

this is going to take a long time, but what you need is:

> a couple of scaffolding planks strong enough to hold the object
> a good few breeze blocks, wooden blocks, planks/whatever comes to hand
> your engine crane

Method:

1. Pick the object up with your engine crane, get it as high as you can.
2. Put the planks underneath it, supported as high as possible on a stack of breeze blocks or whatever you brought - this should get you nearly high enough
3. put the object down onto the planks
4. Reverse the pickup up to the planks with the object now hopefully only a bit lower than the load bed
5. Now put the crane on the load bed of the pickup, pick up the object and pull it onto the pickup

This way you do it in 2 2-foot lifts, which should be within scope of your engine crane.
