Brilliant link thanks. From a bygone, pre-pc era when the British were proud of their achievements. Lots on BRM, Jim Clark, Hill etc. There goes my weekend.

The racing links are great, but the political ones are really an eye opener.

What was the story behind Pathe news. I understand it was shown in the cinemas and as public awareness type films, but was it meant to out the view of the nation or the government forward.

I was watching the ones about the Oil crisis in the middle east in the 50's and comments such as 'hopefull they'll come to their senses' and sentiments such as 'they can't make it without our expertise' are fascinating (and somewhat amusing) to hear.

Pathe News was a newsreel company (there were others, such as Gaumont British News) and they usually consisted of a weekly review of world and domestic events for cinema audiences. Up until the 1970s, when people went to the cinema, they did not just pay to watch one main film. They expected -

a) some cartoon shorts - such as Looney Tunes or Merry Melodies from Warners

b) a short documentary - such as the travelogue series "The March of Time"

c) a weekly newsreel - such as Pathe News

d) a B feature - i.e. a full length film but usually shot on a lowish budget without major stars

e) the main A feature film

As TV came to dominate current affairs broadcasting in the 60s, the newsreel began to disappear. That's why you won't see much in the Pathe Archive beyond about 1972 or so.
