Would I be right in thinking that members of MENSA are, almost without exception, utter bellends?

What was that about bellends?

I'm a member, for what it's worth. I don't think I'm a bell-end though, but I'm sure others do.

I only did it to see if I could do it. nerd It doesn't really mean anything.

152 if you're wondering bowtie

I do wonder what makes people want to become a member. It's not like they select you based on their clandestine observation.

You have to physically, actively want to be a member.

"I'm smart, I want to be a member of a group that celebrates this smartness. To sit amongst equals (and occasional betters, frequently lessers) and discuss our intellect and deride those who don't make the grade. Henceforth, I shall reveal my membership as proof of my intellect to all who will listen."

It's similar to people wanting to be a radio presenter. At what point do they think "Hey, I'm fking interesting. People would love to listen to me. Mother. I am forsaking my exams for I... am going to be... <dramaticpause> a RADIO DJ!"

Further bellend proof :
Jamie Theakston
Clive Sinclair
Jimmie Saville

But then so is Julie Peterson, a playmate from '87.

"Oscar Wrigley – youngest boy accepted to Mensa at an age of 2 years, 5 months and 11 days."

I'm not sure what's wierder, his parents for making him sit it or MENSA for letting him sit it.

You've clearly researched well. That's how every MENSA member thinks.

I saw a test online, I sent off for a practice at home thing. Took it, passed it, got invited to go and sit the proper test, passed it.

I don't go to any group meetings or anything, nor do I read the crap that comes through the post. Like I say, I only did it for the challenge.

You might ask why I continue to pay the annual fee? Good question, I'm too lazy to cancel the Direct Debit.

I did the supervised test and passed but didn't want to pay to join.

Anyone whose occupation is "blogger" is by definition a complete bellend.

Nope. Surprisingly, I've not researched it at all. However;

This is the bit I mean. You actively chose to become a member. Why not stop at the point you knew you could, when you'd passed the original test? Don't worry about answering because I'm being rehtorical. It's just the idea of a club, based on a flawed measure of intellect, where people actively have to want to be part of. I just don't understand the motivation.

In my experience, I have to agree with the OP that in the main, MENSA members are pompous pricks (present company excepted).

MENSA is one of the many organisations that probably made sense before the Interwebs, when meeting people who are 'like you' wasn't necessarily easy. Other (equally cliquey, self serving and bellend-ridden) organisations would include the local Golf Club, Masons, various business groups, political parties, Rotary Club, Women's Institute and so on. Any organisation that selects who is 'appropriate' to join is bound to have similar elements.

biggrin

Personally, I wouldn't join any club that would have me as a member. Now where's my Pistonheads sticker and secret handshake?

As above, except I let my membership lapse many years ago.

When I joined, I was single, recently moved to a new area where I didn't know anyone, worked with people who were either married with kids, or much younger than me and I'm not really a party animal.

Bear in mind this was a good few years before anyone in the UK was on the Internet, so it seemed a reasonable way to try and make contact with a few people on a similar intellectual level. Cutting a long story short I ended up with about 50 'pen-pals' around the World, a couple of very nice 'flings', a few places to stay and some cheap holidays, got invited to the Oscars, and I've been living with a friend of one of them for nearly 20 years.

Was it worth it - hell, yes!

I should get an award for being so utterly right.
